Dr. X may not really have a doctorate?

How?
The teacher calls herself Dr. at school.
By the teacher's own social media posts that she has put out to the public -- she doesn't call herself a doctor on LinkedIn or even mention she has a PhD. Her LinkedIn is completely viewable by the public. On her Facebook page, she says she has a PhD in Educational Studies, but doesn't say from where or when. That information she has provided is also left publicly viewable - along with her current job description that she is a "Protector of little people in purgatory."
VADOE database does not show she has a PhD or EdD -- just a bachelor's and master's.

These are facts - facts that she herself has supplied publicly.

So, how is that defamation that I've posted about it? Defamation is a false statement presented as a fact.

She's the one that has provided the information. She's the one who has called herself Dr.

How? Because it doesn’t matter what she calls herself. It could be a nickname. She could have a credential you don’t know about or isn’t listed. It doesn’t matter. What matters is you seem hell bent on ruining her reputation. This thread alone, with the identifying information, is enough to get you sued into oblivion. Your threats to go to the board suggest you want her to face some sort of consequences (for what? She hasn’t done anything wrong!). That’s what defamation is — lies about something that causes injury to their reputation.

I hope you do get sued. I am not a teacher, I am a parent. But your behavior as you describe it is far more egregious than anything this poor teacher has done in terms of honorifics she chooses for herself.

Back the hell off.

NP here, just read this whole thread. It is entirely proper to resolve this discrepancy. The person states they have a PhD in one source but in others only the lower degrees are verified — this absolutely requires explanation.

Well, the context matters. A medical doctor who lies? A researcher who does? Yep, that’s a big deal. But a doctorate is basically irrelevant to good teaching. Studies have shown the lack of connection between education and what makes a teacher a good one. I believe those were about Master’s degree but the same would hold here. It’s almost the same as a teacher saying something like, I used to be a James Beard winning chef when they weren’t. I know people will disagree with that comparison but it really does not matter unless this person is doing education research. (I say this with no disrespect to teachers. Just that the correlation between advanced degrees and quality teaching isn’t there.

Do I think this person has some mental issues? Absolutely! Does it matter for how well my child learns middle school language arts? Not a bit.

And a PP is right. Teachers talk. They will warn each other and teachers will do what they need to avoid your wrath. That won’t always be in your child’s interest. Unless you switch schools now, I doubt you can undo that damage.

Right- we wouldn't want someone who is TEACHING children to demonstrate the legitimate value of educational attainment honestly. I'm honestly horrified at the number of people in this thread who think a teacher lying about her education is acceptable. I certainly wouldn't want her teaching my kids

Not op here either. Have to say I agree. Requires explanation. A big discrepancy. I wouldn’t want my kids to be calling a professional by incorrect title. It’s unethical and the teacher is not leading with integrity if they are requesting that title to be used and haven’t actually earned doctorate.

Me, too. It’s repulsive. Every person should lead with integrity. We should expect that from anyone. So gross how people trivialize and victimize OP.

Op needs help because she is obsessing over a teacher who isn't teaching her kids now. Maybe it would have made more sense to question this if her kids were still at that school.

If she just didn't update credentials and she has earned her degree, then what OP? Give her the benefit of the doubt and don't stalk her.

That said, if that teacher had not in fact earned that degree and is asking people to call her a Dr, we have 2 people who need help. The OP and that teacher.

I'm curious if the teacher would actually reply and put this to rest.

Op, shouldn’t you be working instead of posting “anonymous” support for yourself? 9 pages disagreeing with you and then suddenly a flurry of comments supporting you? Good effort.

Op just asked a question. It’s a valid question. Teacher has no grounds for defamation. It’s just a question. Also lying is lying. The teacher is more at risk for portraying her/him with false credential.

Unless the credentials aren’t false. Then OP is causing reputation all harm to the teacher.

But OP’s kids DO NOT GO TO THE SCHOOL. Amazingly, this woman appears to be OP’s neighbor and friend.

No sane teacher would. Rule 1: don’t engage with crazy.

So there is another teacher on here saying the database doesn't have correct info on their degrees.

Agree that this is a vendetta against a teacher who treated their child in a way the parent did not like.

Well, the kids don’t know she’s lying unless you’ve told them. So they didn’t learn a bad lesson from that unless you told them.

I’m not op and support op in asking the question. It’s important to get it resolved bc other kids are still calling the teacher dr and that’s screwed up if teacher actually never earned that degree. It was a question. I think it’s so weird people think it’s ok to be unethical in portrayal of one’s accomplishments. It’s disappointing.

What? Your reasoning lacks critical thinking. The kids are being misled by an unethical behavior. Why would any parent want their children taught by that. I agree with op that it is ok to ask as if the teacher has degree it just needs to be updated. What’s wrong with asking? Especially if teacher is obligating children to call her a tutor she never earned. That’s the disgraceful part.

Right, but my point was we should collectively care about the kids still remaining at the school. Any unethical behavior that is happening in our county is a problem that impacts our community, and shouldn’t be pushed under the rug. These are public school employees being compensated by tax dollars we all pay. We should focus beyond our own needs and support ethical behavior for all teachers teaching in our school system.
