The city is currently offering a $25K bonus to new recruits. This gives a 1st year officer a total comp of $80K, plus $6K housing assistance from DC, plus overtime (pretty much AYCE buffet). What's the bottleneck with recruiting? This city graduates a bunch of kids from HS who could go straight into cadet corps and MPD. Is it the drug disqualification? The Defund the Police/ACAB movement made it very unpopular to be a cop. We will need to try much harder to find good people now. So self-defeating. One of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen “educated” people buy into. |

No one wants to be a cop, or at least not the quality of applicant you had 20 years ago. As a former Atlanta Police Department officer said, “You’re a split second away from death or indictment.” Police work can be messy. Unfortunately, with the internet and smart phones, if a cop kills someone with a gun, we immediately see an elementary school photo of the criminal and learn about his dreams to attend Harvard. |

Yeah, like three years ago they did. But step forward three years to the present, and we barely ever hear anywhere near as much from the Defund/ACAB people anymore. Plus, police could shut them up by fixing their policies with a few tweaks to be more responsible. |

This. My spouse served in the military for a long time and I was aware that if he made a single mistake on the job (i'm not even talking about human cost, could be the level of something with equipment) he/we were hosed. And that's a job with some public support. Can't imagine without it. |

You would typically have to use the national guard for this. It would be challenged, but I presume if a state of emergency was declared and Congress enacted it? To have worse crime than Baltimore... wow. |

| Of course no one wants to be a cop in DC, even black police officers get called white supremacists when DC criminals film themselves getting arrested. Eventually people will learn that you can get a MPD salary, benefits, and pension by almost doing nothing. You can't sleep in your car because reporters will put you on blast, but you can certainly go an entire career without issuing a traffic infraction, making an arrest, and possibly never writing a report. I've had two interactions with MPD and they just discouraged me from even reporting any sort of theft |
