Will DC eve go back to being somewhat tough on crime?

How much tax base will we have to lose, how many rims, now many puppies jacked, how many crazy azz stories until the point that soft of crime criminal justice doesn’t work? It’s so frustrating seeing all these half measures being implemented out of “equity”. Can we just tackle the issue with a strong response? The answer is a resounding “no”. We are stuck with Charles and No Do and rising crime and that’s it. It’s such a shame.

When was this era that you would like to go "back" to?

I agree OP. Sadly I don’t see the pendulum swinging back. We need a cultural reset. ATVs, dirt bikes and loud cars speeding through intersections at 100 mph with no regard for their fellow humans. 14 yr old car jackers. A mom and child shot by a madman who was going to run them over on a sidewalk. Open air drugging and gambling. It’s Gotham city. I’d like to move, if only I could afford to.

I've lived in the city over 30 years and it was worse 30 years ago. By all accounts the 80's were even worse, and the 70's worse than that. The 60's? Forget about it, they burned the city down. The 50's were pure chaos. During WWII it was anything goes. The Great Depression and the Bonus Army March? Nothing was safe.

I know. Just today a judge refused to go along with the domestic terrorism enhancement for a domestic terrorist who attacked the Capitol on 1/6/21, gave him a mere seven year slap on the wrist. That's no deterrent!

Is Starbucks racist? Are the multiple other businesses that have shuttered in DC racist? The small businesses who can’t and won’t operate because folks avoid DC as it looks like a dump and feels unsafe?.

Businesses are a huge tax base. Take your racist comment and look deep into the mirror.

So the people committing crimes are the ones mostly paying taxes? It’s definitely them.

Not with democrats in office.

The 93 carjacking bill was pretty effective.

However, this is planned for a Council vote after the election this fall. https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/us-attorneys-office-testifies-hearing-revised-criminal-code-act-2021

The USA is appointed by the President. The USAO is part of DOJ and for decades has been pretty much non-responsive to FOIA requests re: stats.

Judges are also federally appointed.

The only input DC voters have is the DC Council who write the laws, including penalties, and the AG who prosecutes some juvenile crimes. The AG is more responsive to FOIA requests. The role of chair of the Safety Committee on the Council is quite important. The current chair, Charles Allen, is running for reelection unopposed this cycle.
