You are correct in that its easy to live your life in MoCo unaware of the gang activity and violence.

But I also challenge you to go walk around some areas of Wheaton or Montgomery Village after dark by yourself and still ask yourself if its anything like the Wire.

I was once in the Walkers Choice apartment area off of MV ave after dark and it was not a welcoming environment. At All

Unruly roving gangs of teen agers was rampant when I moved out of Montgomery Village. Mostly they did just petty crimes, but they were a pain in the a##. That was 12 years ago.

Okay your insane if you compare Wheaton and MV like The Wire. Insane!

Apologies if I offended anyone, just trying to find the safest place I can for my family that we can afford. If there’s an increased chance for stray bullets in certain places I’d feel more comfortable not living there.

Just wait until you find out about lightning!

I just scanned some of this "very DCUM" thread and kept coming back to the OP.

How was this news to you?! Where have you been living? Under a rock?!

It was total (and sobering news to me), and have been in DC for decades. I rarely go to the suburbs though but wouldn’t have known. I imagined it being much farther out. I think this is very helpful to know and glad it’s been taken seriously.

It’s just terrible to mock people. It’s an unfortunate trend on dcum which is presumably a defensive tactic to preserve “dirty little [real estate] secrets”. People who correctly point out planes in the Palisades and toxic dumps in the Spring Valley are called crazy etc. These are real problems and gaslighting people isn’t making them go away. I though OP was very nice and correct to want a worry-free life for her family at least in the things she/he can control as they’ve not bought yet.

I looked up these gangs — there’s a gang task force and publications and shows links of these to major cartels etc. these are not low income kids roaming around doing petty crimes from what I’ve read

A gang is defined as 3 or more people that commit crimes together.

OP sounds like she has never lived in this area.

What’s that neighborhood the Kushners used to live in? They are kind of a gang, no?

https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/maryland/facts-about-ms-13-in-maryland-virginia/65-436466709

This is from a more a 2021 article:
https://www.justice.gov/usao-md/pr/ms-13-gang-leader-pleads-guilty-racketeering-conspiracy-gang-activities-including-murders

MS-13 is a national and international gang composed primarily of immigrants or descendants from El Salvador and other central American countries. Branches or “cliques” of MS-13, one of the largest street gangs in the United States, operate throughout Frederick County, Anne Arundel County, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County, Maryland.

sad that this gang was created in America
we really are a shit hole country

Mock all you want. No interest in being around this or for my children to be exposed to it. My choice, free country.

I’ve never voted Rep. I voted for legalizing drugs. But I’d vote for anyone who’s bring peace back to the streets and would vote to ban marijuana in a second, having had to live with it now. The city is a mess and smells like a used sock.

But there are neighborhoods where this does not happen and that’s where I choose to live.

What a weird sentiment. Who wants to be terrorized by gangs?!

OP you say you want to avoid "getting hit by stray bullets"

BUT YOU LIVED IN DC!

that literally happened in DC TEW-DAY!!!

I am so confused by you which is why I said I feel for your poor husband who seems to not want to move and here you are pointing to random incidents. But please move. You seem the type to call the police on a black man walking.

Lots and lots of gangs in Maryland. You would feel much safer in Virginia.

Yes, VA has no gangs, which is why VA has a gang task force. I guess they got rid of all the gangs there. /s
