There is a massive wave of depression across the world and most people don't even realize how deeply we all are into it, and teachers are not immune. We need to dig out from this pandemic and give each other some grace. |
| Why all the outrage? We have been paying this much at a Cathedral school for several years. This is on par with other top private schools in our area and NYC and LA. |
+1 People are acting like not getting in ED is some mark of failure, but that was never intended to be used for most students -- so people are surprised with tens of thousands of students get deferred to RD where they should have applied in the first place. |
Many SFS seniors got rejected (not deferred) from their ED school. |
| Oh no. How will the 1% be able to pay for their kids to get better educations that the rest of us. |
| The development office has quickly become huge under the new advancement head. And check out the job listings where they are looking for 5 more hires to start immediately. |
| I'm getting a cult-like vibe here. |
Seriously. It's pretty arrogant for a family to expect that a kid will have a guaranteed admit to a highly competitive school just because they went to Sidwell. Especially when a very large number of kids from Sidwell applied ED (or SCEA) to the same school. I think 15 kids applied to Brown. Now, is Brown really going to take 15 kids from Sidwell or any one high school in America? Yeah, no. Max of 5 in a year. In a good year. Maybe Andover will have a higher rate. If there was any ED disaster coming from Sidwell it was the parents/kids misplaying the their ED/SCEA picks. |
I’m the “unconscionable” poster. Those that say to ‘just find another school’ are offering a complete red herring. My kids are in MS/US and are flourishing. We love the school, think the teachers are fantastic and very much appreciate the community of parents. However, a tuition hike of this amount really is over the top, especially with a lack of information as to why the increase is so large. It’s not a little thing to pull your teenager out of an environment that is working for them to move school. The administration knows that the vast majority of parents won’t pull their kids, but will suck it up and pay the increase. That’s what makes me angry. |
The tuition increase last year was 3%, which was below comparable schools. I’m sure you weren’t complaining then. When you combine the two years, the average increase is on par with comparable schools. Seems that the problem here is that Sidwell should have increased tuition more last year! |
Rich kid school charges prices only rich people can afford, shocking |
Did they ED to a high reach? A school with single digit acceptance numbers? Did they not believe people from prior years who said 'its a lottery' if you are unhooked? Do they have a good list of EA and RD schools? The jury isn't out until RD's come in. Hold your complaining until April. |
Ha! Good one. An increase of over 10% for MS/US is totally acceptable, with no real explanation of where that money is going. Sure. Whatever you're smoking this morning, I could certainly use some. Parents obviously should expect increases year over year, my point is simply that these rates, even taking into account last year's, are ridiculous and unjustified. And "pull your kid(s) out", is not an acceptable or tenable answer. |
Parent of another MS/ US kid combo, and I agree completely with every word you've said here. Great school; we all love it. A 6.7% tuition hike in one year is out of control. Both thoughts can be true at the same time. |
+1 The academics are not rigorous at all. Kids are mainly learning from khan academy so what justifies this high of an increase? |
