Straight from a member of Youngkin’s team on education:
“ Finally—and of utmost importance—Virginia must embrace school choice.

The Old Dominion has had a modest tax credit scholarship program since 2013, but student eligibility is limited to those from lower-income households or with special needs.

Now is the time for Virginia to follow in the steps of its neighbor to the West and establish universal education savings accounts, as West Virginia did earlier this year. Every single child in Virginia, from the moment they begin kindergarten, should be able to choose the school or education provider that works for them and aligns with their values.”

After saying that VA needs to ban “CRT” and drop the requirement for teaching certificates (!).

Very thankful for Youngkin and this slate of professionals. Finally, it appears education in VA will be taken seriously.

You support dropping teacher certifications?

I support a less cumbersome way for subject-matter experts who want to teach to become teachers. *Especially* now that we have a dearth of teachers.

When it comes to ideas for changing up education, I hate the ideas of both parties - Democrats AND Republicans. McAuliffe sucked and I expect Youngkin will, too. I doubt Charter schools are the magical solution people think they are so I do hope Y. Has other tricks up his sleeve. At least the Education department will now drop the “dumbing down math” initiative, right?

Politically, I am a Democrat but I am also probably an elitist who believes competition can be healthy, and I hate how advanced education and advanced students have been neglected under the policy push for integration and equity. If you told me that all the Democratic party’s education propaganda and “principles” were funded by Chinese and Russian nationalists, I would believe you. Smart, hard-working kids need to be challenged and pushed by their teachers AND their peers; they don’t need to be dumped into classes with other average and below-average students. It’s in the COUNTRY’s interest to develop top-caliber scientists and thinkers.

I takes a semester to become a teacher through the VA career switcher program. It’s not cumbersome.

I lean left on most things but wholeheartedly support charters and vouchers. The huge schools and crowded classrooms that are standard in FCPS don’t work for a lot of kids (mine included). Pre-COVID, my kids were in AAP at a well regarded center and were largely ignored while teachers dealt with disruptive behavior. We moved to an online charter school last year and the curriculum difference has been staggering, particularly in language arts. I would love an in person charter option in Fairfax that uses the same curriculum.

My cousin and her family live in Arizona, which doesn’t have good public schools but does have education funding that follows the student. All three of her kids are in either private school or the BASIS charter school and are thriving. Friends in DC live their kids’ charter school. I don’t see why we can’t have something similar here.

Because it will drain budgets from existing public schools. Any issues they currently have will be even tougher to overcome.

Yes, it’s not cumbersome. Why are the Rs pushing to lower standards for teachers?

Governmnet schools have done a terrible job of dealing with the issues, so allowing people to take their education dollars elsewhere only makes sense. There's no reason for the government to operate a monopoly on education using our tax dollars. Allowing families to choose where and how their kids are educated will allow the government to focus on the few students who remain.

No. We right the course, we don’t sink the ship.

People move here for the schools. Why would we flush them down the toilet?

She has never been an educator and has no degrees in education. She is a consultant who makes money off of schools. She wants more testing because she’s all about “data.” She lives in Minnesota. She is a charter school advocate.

Arid Qarni was horrible! But Youngkin made a really badly pick.

She has degrees in public policy and government, and has worked in the education field for decades, but I guess you can pretend she’d be far more qualified to lead a state-wide department if she had a degree in elementary education from Longwood. And she sent her own kids to FCPS before moving to Minnesota.

You people are so partisan and afraid that anyone will ever challenge people to do things differently or better. The fact that you’re attacking her so viciously before she even takes office is precisely why others welcome her appointment.

+1. And it’s a public policy management position not a teaching position

+2
She's beyond qualified for this position and I wish her well.

+100. There's so many idiots on this thread who have no idea what they are talking about. It's all liberal screed with no basic understanding of facts. Most here don't even know the difference between vouchers and charter schools. They just spew hate from the left. Maybe time to leave DCUM

The West Virginia program gives everyone the per pupal state funding to spend on any school they choose. That seems like a windfall for private who can up the tuition by that amount with impacting existing families at all. It will put a hell of a dent into local budgets though

Most on the right assume that vouchers offer school choice without realizing that they cover a fraction of the tuition at any existing school.
