Sounds like a big improvement over Atif Qarni.
FCPS parents should ask VDOE to demand a data-driven analysis as to whether IB is correlated with improved or reduced student outcomes in FCPS. Obviously they will push for some charters. Maybe we can see how kids at a charter perform compared to kids at a neglected Lewis or Mount Vernon, where all FCPS has to offer is IB and a “social justice” Academy program. |
Charter students are supposed to perform "better" but the real-world data shows they don't. |
| Serious question here. How is a charter school different from a typical public school? If a charter school is beneficial and receives tax dollars, why not allow public schools to operate in the same manner as charter schools? Whatever the model, why not apply to both? |
I can tell you right now the biggest difference is charters can decide who enrolls and who doesn’t. |
I think there's probably less bureaucracy at a charter too. If FCPS could cut a bunch of the people sitting at Gatehouse or in schools as "coaches" that would improve a lot of things too. |
But yet they will receive state money? |
They do in VA, but federal may be different |

I'm way more concerned with what happens to the upcoming math SOL re-write (VMPI) than a possible charter school. Also with the push for a Virginia Literacy law (info: https://www.decodingdyslexiavirginia.org/post/ddva-call-to-action-advocacy-alert) and how that, assuming it's passed, will be implemented under VDOE.
Math and literacy - that's what I want our schools to provide for a baseline. |

It will be a huge improvement because the dept of ed can now focus on raising standards, covid remediation, literacy, math and science skills instead of its constant focus on equity, lowering standards and social justice over the past few years.
Parents should be very optimistic about the changes. |
Just having a Secretary of Education focus on the education part of their title will be such a welcome change. |
+100. |
+200. Good riddance to Atif Qarni. Now we just have to replace at least half the clowns on the FCPS School Board. |
Most of the advisors are huge charter advocates. If I had to bet, I’d say charters are first priority, making sure CRT isn’t taught and bad books are banned will be number 2, and the rest will be 3. |

How much influence can the Sec of Ed and Governor have when the changes that have been taking place in FCPS are a result of the OneFairfax policies implemented by the county?
