Good for Wilder for calling out the hypocrisy.

Former Democratic Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder, the commonwealth's first Black governor, condemned the campaign of Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe for launching a video to play at Black churches after the service in which Vice President Kamala Harris urges churchgoers to vote for McAuliffe. Lawyers have suggested that when churches play the video, they violate Section 501(c)3 of the IRS code, potentially imperiling their tax-exempt status.

"Well, it’s very good for her to do that, causing these churches to lose their tax-exempt status," Wilder quipped in remarks to The Washington Examiner, referring to the Johnson Amendment, which bans organizations that are exempt from taxes under 501(c)3 from supporting candidates. "If this is legal, then it’s surprising to me."

“The people of Virginia have not forgotten. They are not stupid. They are not fooled, they are not being hoodwinked," Wilder said. "Terry … you said [Northam] was in blackface. He's got to go. Have you changed your mind about any of this? And if not, then why not? Now, explain to the people of the commonwealth."

Thank you, Doug Wilder, for speaking the truth here. Terry is a perpetual liar.

He is a perpetual liar and an utter hypocrite.

My daughter and I met TM when he was gov at a DMV. The sleeziness just oozes from him in person.

Exactly! His vibes are soooo nasty. How people can stand to be around him? I mean, you physically feeling it.

I’m not voting for him to be my friend, I’m voting for him to be governor.

There are very few politicians who are 100% genuine, as they are constantly adjusting their messages for different audiences.

McAuliffe, however, manages to be among those who are 100% fake. No one can listen to him in any setting and come away with the impression that he believes a single word that comes out of his mouth. If you support him, it’s only because you’re voting against another candidate, because it’s just so obvious that McAuliffe does not care about anyone other than himself.

Is McAuliffe a progressive? I.e. is he trying to go the way of Bernie (or even Biden) with free everything? I know he was a good governor (though I only moved here at the end of his term) and the state since has been #1 of business many times. To me you'd think Youngkin's private equity background would be helpful here. But I'm also not interested in a covid denier who'll roll back vax mandates etc. (I assume he would since he's a Trump guy) - because part of a vibrant economy, is keeping it open.

I'm just less and less interested in the progressive policies, free money to individuals, diversity etc. (and no I'm not white) and more interested in economic growth because I think that lifts all ships (and I'm from a northern state where industry went away - I know how much people suffer then). Thoughts?

McAuliffe is a moderate D with a solid plan. He has a proven track record from his last term as governor and can hit the ground running.

Virginia has been doing very well with Ds at the helm. Let’s keep moving forward.

Well, if you consider imploding schools 'doing really well,' you have a pretty low standard. it's time for a change. Terry m was not a good gov and Gov Blackface was worse.

"Imploding schools?" Whatever are you prattling on about?

You do know that schools are only cited by 7% of the electorate as a top issue, right?

The schools are just fine. Among the best in the nation.

But, you know, don't take my word for it. Take the teachers' unions. They endorsed McAuliffe. They see right through Youngkin's bizarre doublespeak.

I don't know where you are getting that 7% number. Almost every poll I have read regarding the top issues for voters this election has 1) economy 2) education 3) healthcare. This is per Newsweek as of yesterday and consistent across the board - "Forty percent of Virginia voters surveyed said the economy or jobs was the most important issue impacting the governor's race while 23 percent said education and 17 percent said health care, according to the poll." Further, it shows Youngkin with two digit leads in the polls for the first two issues, with T-Mac in the lead on the third. This poll has it in 1st place over jobs, COVID, and healthcare. https://www.wfxrtv.com/news/your-local-election-hq/poll-education-is-the-most-important-issues-facing-virginia/

Seriously, you are citing the teachers' union support McA as a sign of anything. Joe Dirt could be the dem candidate, and the teachers' union would support him.

It was a dropped number. I meant 37%.

Youngkin boast he will raise teacher pay ... and they still won't endorse him. That says it all.

Virginia education is not in any way, shape or form "imploding." What ridiculous hyperbole.

Republicans can't be trusted with public education. Mr. Private Equity didn't even send his kids to public schools. Neither did McAuliffe, I realize. But this Youngkin soundbite that he thinks parents should tell schools what to teach is beyond ridiculous. Everyone sees through it.

Which should tell you something about how deeply public educators distrust Republicans on public education matters. It’s not surprising when you look at the issues they run on (e.g., school choice) and what they do when they’re in power (e.g., stripping public education funding).

Lol, it’s not trust, it’s fear. The unions know that republicans would hold the teachers accountable for their performance, not just rubber stamp union demands for less work, more money, no metrics and lifetime employment.

BS. The GOP isn’t remotely familiar with the concept of “holding people accountable”.

Yes, the republicans hold the record for encouraging criminal behavior and do anything to win, even if it means organizing a violent coup against our country. TERRORISTS. TRAITORS.

Thank you, Doug Wilder, for speaking the truth here. Terry is a perpetual liar.

+1. I always liked Doug Wilder. Really nice to hear his take ion this

It takes courage for anyone in the political establishment to speak out about what a fake Terry McAuliffe is, so it means a lot when a former Democratic Governor like Doug Wilder speaks the truth.

Exactly.

Troll go away. Yankoff will be a nightmare. He's an absolute idiot and anyone who knows him knows that. He's also an extreme drumpf lackey and is pathetically trying to hide it. BTW where was he Jan 6?

Right, an absolute idiot who rose to the success he did despite the fact that anyone who knows him, including the people he worked for, knowing exactly that.

What have you ever done?
