The fact that more northwestern and uchicago grads are being represented and displacing them (Or their kids) in top jobs and grad school admissions is a real and legitimate threat - they wouldn’t have been so pissed otherwise. |
It’s proud parents rightfully pulling for their school or infomercial. You can tell which is which from the headline:”BREAKING.” |
I wish that DCUM just removes the ability to comment anonymously to do away with all this trolling. |
The weird thing is that this isn’t exactly new? Those two schools have always been quite good, and have virtually always been among the country’s most prestigious. Oops! I probably triggered her again. |
lol, nobody is impressed by NU. At least UChicago has a name recognition. |
Thar she blows! |
We believe you! You are so right! How did you get so smart? Please, tell us more!!! |
I just… can’t. Chicago’s population increased in the last census. Take your Fox News driven misinformation elsewhere. |
Oh snap! Go get'em, gal! |
They. are. Not. This is factually inaccurate. Chicago saw population growth in 2020. |
| Gross that you give away $480M to a university that is doing just fine instead of using it to fix the systemic problems plaguing poor people in Chicago. That sum could change lives for generations but too bad it doesn’t put your name on buildings. |
| Just love seeing the HYPSM prestige defense squad getting owned over and over again. Most of them wouldn't have the stats to be admitted into Northwestern or UChicago, so why the fuss? |
I agree with this in theory, but the Ryans are long-time benefactors of the Chicago region and pour millions of dollars into the city every year through different philanthropic schemas. You can take issue with how that's done, but then you'd be leveling a criticism against the entire concept of modern philanthropy to begin with (which, again, I wouldn't necessarily disagree with). Considering that most of this money is going toward breakthrough medical research, I can't say it's a bad thing outright. It's a tricky issue because detractors on the other side will harshly criticize what they perceive as rich people just "throwing money at poor people" to try to fix a problem instead of, you know, fixing the problem. |
I guess people are amused - or scratching their heads - cuz what’s the big deal with NU? How does it differ from Vandy, Emory, Rice, U of ND, USC, Georgetown, JHU, WashU? These are all great schools. So what? |
Well, first of all, why are you bringing that existential question into a thread about a donation that Northwestern received? The fact that you are reveals more about your intentions and insecurities than it does anything about the school itself. Second, if you really want to play this game, Northwestern routinely outranks every single one of the aforementioned schools (with the exception of JHU) across various metrics and criteria, and pretty much always have. I absolutely agree that all those schools are great, including Northwestern. There's more than enough love to go around! |
