It's legal in Maryland too. And several other states https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States#/media/File:Cousin_marriage_map1.svg I've never heard these jokes about VA. I hear them about West Virginia, but marrying your cousin is actually illegal there. I think 3rd cousin is fine, especially if you didn't really grow up together, seeing each other at family events, etc. I don't think I've ever met a 3rd cousin--if I had happened to meet one some other way (like in college or at a bar or something) and fell in love with them, I'd have married them. |

3rd cousin is fine. I have no idea who my third cousins are.
I know first cousins who are married (in another country) and it's been no big deal. They had genetic testing and their kids are fine. |
