Our family hikes at least once a month but when we go on vacation we often hike every day. I do not own enough "hiking pants" to cover daily hiking so I will hike in jeans on certain hikes. If someone is hiking in jeans but has broken in boots and a well used water backpack I assume they are like me. If you are comfortable in what you are wearing you will feel more confident and have more fun. |
there is a happy medium between jeans and gortex patagonia- basically anything you'd run in also works for hiking |
No, they don't. They look like someone who enjoys being outside to me, especially if it's bad weather. Yes, if you carry a camelback and hiking stick and the full 10 essentials for a 1-hr hike in rock creek park, you will look dumb. But the whole "athleisure" category has really expanded so that there are a lot of options for comfortable and fashionable outdoor wear. What else is OP going to spend her clothing budget on right now? A really nice set of baselayer and great shell will last her a long time. |
I don't like wearing tight stretchy pants to hike. I have some loose cotton pants with pockets that I prefer. That said I would not think twice if I saw someone wearing jeans on a hike - who cares? As long as you can move, you're fine. Obv if you're going to get wet on the hike you don't want to be in jeans or cotton - but some 10 mile day hike? Feh. WHo cares what you wear. I wore cotton cords to walk 50k in one day once. I was comfortable. |
| This is a date. If it is bad weather they probably aren’t going hiking. They are not hiking Appalachian Trail. Jeans are completely fine. It is all I wear when I hike. |
| Those of you that are wearing sneakers and jeans are obviously not hiking, but going on a walk outdoors, perhaps in a lightly wooded area. Stop calling it hiking, it's cringe-inducing. |

Are we talking "hike" like a 1-mile walk in a local park with a picnic lunch? Or "hike" like a full-day trek on minimally improved trails, or Old Rag, Billy Goat, etc?
I wear casual athleisure or jeans for the former, more technical options for the latter. DH says both are cute, but he likes a more rustic look in general. |
Hah I was hiking the Appalachian Trail a few weeks ago and wore jeans. There was a couple on a date there too. Wear pants that make your ass look good. |
|
I’m looooooving all the police on here. “You’d better not buy any technical gear if you haven’t been hiking your whole life because we will know you’re a fake!” and “Ugh, that’s not a hike that’s a walk in the forest, loser.”
I thought I’d click on this thread and think OP was the dingbat, but it turns out the hiking contingent comes out looking bad. |
Walking in the woods is hiking. |
Jeans are what 90% of the people wear on the AT for day hikes unless it's summer. I went on a 2 day birding trip after a 1 day class, and all of us were dying at the couple who showed up day 1 of the field trip in full on safari gear. Just a note, if you think you need to go purchase $$$ worth of clothing for an outside event, you might be a tool. |
to each their own, if I'm camping on a multi day hike, I'm not wearing jeans. Going to bed sweaty then waking up to put on sweaty jeans for another day of hiking seems like an invitation to chafing. I'm probably not wearing safari gear either though |
This is not a multi-day hike. It is a DATE and they are taking a hike. What the hell. I would still wear jeans on a multi day hike though. Not tight ones, but for woods and brambles, jeans are excellent and durable. |

IT IS ONLY HIKING IF YOU GET EATEN BY A BEAR |
