Looking cute and feminine while hiking

Anonymous
Wow this thread has gone off the rails.

OP, I go for frequent hikes with my kids. Probably glorified walks in the woods, but we do go off trail and through streams and have a blast.

My favorite pants are these trail tights, and DH says my butt looks good in them.

DP. Just bought the fleece lined version of these for winter. Great to hear the recommendation.

Those are cute! Love the pockets and high rise, which to me are important practical details for hiking gear. And on sale!

Thanks for the tip —DP

We have a great time and honestly if one you judgy b’s has seen me out on a hike with my family, please know I (and probably everyone else) do not care what you think. Try enjoying your own hike instead of worrying about what others are wearing.

The point isn't that nobody should hike in jeans (although I agree they are a terrible choice for a longer hike or if you're going to get wet, but fine for a shorter walk). it's that OP specifically asked for "cute hiking outfits." Since she likely has little else to spend her money on, no reason not to invest in some more technical and comfy athleisure!

I'm not saying OP should buy jeans for hiking, but several people have said that they laugh at or judge people who hike in jeans, and it's like, why do you care what I wear to take a short, easy hike with my family?

Yes, and I am one of the jeans defenders and my entire point is basically DON’T go out and buy ANYTHING to go on one casual hike! Just wear your jeans with leggings underneath or something!!!

(It’s a stupid, unnecessary waste of money. But whatever, if there is anything Americans love to do it’s throw money down the drain because they are so terrible at math, have zero understanding of statistics, and cannot appropriately assess risk. But I’m sure they will all look OMG so cute in their custom hiking gear which was personally approved by America’s top Forest Rangers and elite mountain rescue teams while demanding their student loans be forgiven... only mostly joking 😂)

As an avid hiker who dresses like a hiker, and not remotely cute at all, I love this thread so much.

FWIW oP, I married the man I went hiking with on a date.

Hell, I barely see people wear jeans at Target now. Why wouldn't you just wear leggings!?

then you've never been out on the at

My BFF hiked the AT - 6 months! And she did most definitely did not pack jeans. Every once counts, and denim is the worst offender. Jeans might be fine for a 45-minute walking hike, but if you are scrambling over rocks or might step into a stream, do not wear denim. The cotton is heavy, soaks up water, and is not flexible compared to other fabrics that are out there. It's so easy to find cute joggers or fleece leggings, there's no need to wear denim. Save your jeans for dates where you won't be hiking.

Yep, I do volunteer rescue. We are not allowed to wear denim.

Really? Do they tell you to wear leggings?

Maybe our Army soldiers should stop wearing fatigue pants and stick to fleece joggers and leggings since they are so durable. Cotton denim is one of the most durable pant material out there and protects you from sticks and branches and things that snag. It is more than sufficient for a 1 hr hike or whatever your date might be. To suggest otherwise, it purely personal preference and has nothing to do with function.

No. We’re under the supervision of our County Fire and Rescue. They send people home who show up in jeans. They are not playing.

Sure. But volunteer rescue is not a casual hike. And people, just wear leggings, thermal underwear, or tights under your jeans. Insulation on the inside, durability on the outside. This is not complicated.

Until that rock turns out to be less stable than you thought and you are now wet from the hip to ankle. Then it gets complicated real fast in January and is not cute.

Stop. The military has been wearing cotton (or sometimes mixed) rip-stop or canvas material for trousers since forever.

Ripstop is nylon.
Military troops used to wear wool in cold weather - not cotton.
Troops today most definitely do not wear cotton uniforms in cold weather.

You are not fun. Of course OP does not have to go shopping, but dear god you are a stick in the mud. Why not engage in a little retail therapy and have some fun with OP while she goes shopping for hiking gear in anticipation of a date. We are in the middle of a pandemic and there is political chaos all around. Indulge in a little fun, will you not? Just because you can't let loose doesn't mean that the rest of us can't have some fun - and some cute hiking gear at the same time.

Tights, leggings, or yoga pants are a big no for hiking.

Imagine if you slip, fall, and your thin spandex leggings get ripped. They are going to just continue to rip.

My DH got me technical fabric pants, hiking boots, base layers etc, even though I hardly break more than 8K steps a day.

I found that I don't get as uncomfortable, cold, chilled, heated etc as when I was wearing jeans...even if I go for a small 45 minute walk in the trails.

OP, why not just plain sweats or joggers? I have picked so many cute and comfy stuff from old navy recently.

I am also seeing loads of people wearing long down coats, hats, gloves, scarves, masks on the paved roads/trails in Black Hills park. Whatever keeps you warm and walking.
