TJ Town Hall #2

Omg, Zuluaga just said if a program is good for one set if students it’s good for all. Untrue. Some kids thrive in a set of conditions that would be horrible for others. Wow, what has happened to FCPS. They are viewing people as their race and nothing else.

Brabrand states that it's time to get more black and latinx students (URM)

Makes sense. Why operate a magnet that now repels more than it attracts.

Well magnets should be taking the top kids, race should have nothing to do with it

A magnet that repels large numbers of students as TJ currently does isn't necessarily attracting the top kids.

It has a very low acceptance rate. You just don’t like the kids it attracts.

OMG he just admits it again point blank this is about getting more black and latinx students period.

He has a desired outcome and wants to rig the system until it gets there. Despite that it is a Governor’s School that is supposed to serve gifted kids not all kids with a 3.5 gpa.

So what does that mean? Are they still deciding? One more month to go...

The number of applications has dropped even as the number of 8th graders in FCPS and the other participating jurisdictions has increased. You just don't like facts that don't support your pre-existing view.

Can anyone summarize what the current proposal is?

I think it is:

- no test
- problem solving essay
- 3.5 GPA (unweighted)
- application...
- lottery

Do we know if the test is definitely going away? Is this information posted anywhere, so confusing.

Thanks,
John

Short answer there is nothing concrete

I posted earlier the new proposed application is 3 basic components

Math and Science Problem Essay (Replaces the test)
A portfolio or how the applicant is 21st century citizen
Other factors (room for the admin committee to do plus-ups for Black, Latin X and FARMS

The only hard requirement so far is a 3.5 GPA

They are tinkering with everything else

How much will be a lottery, how much will each factor be weighted, will there be region and/or middle schools caps, will they take the top X amount and how do they figure out what is the "top"

In the background they are crunching numbers to try and find the optimal formula to get more Black, Latinx and FARMS folks

And they admitted last night that they have no idea who is in the current pool of 3.5 gpa plus Algebra I by 8th so they have no idea if they will even increase the numbers of their preferred groups.
