I’m pretty sure this is referring to the few teachers whose laptops were hacked Sunday before school started. Not sure what specific kid information these people got as I believe they hacked their file—I don’t think teachers can/do keep personal student data on anything other than a network drive. Honestly, not sure about this. |
FCPS hired legal counsel for just this earlier this spring. I imagine they are trying to discover what MAZE actually has. I’m wondering can/will FCPS pay to make this go away? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wusa9.com/amp/article/news/health/coronavirus/fairfax-county-distance-learning-failures-blackboard/65-8cd84749-4512-4ee4-911f-fb2d75124927 |
The FBI operates world wide. |
This is nuts. How safe is our kids work, pictures etc? |

oh it is real. I didn't believe when I saw it here first time |
This just came up in my FB feed too. Great- like FCPS needs another shit storm to deal with. I actually feel for all the teachers and administrators. Despite the vitriol on this board, none of them want any part of the situation we are in! |
Just came to post the same thing. Saw it on NBC 4 news moments ago. Parents, one thing to remember, as the NBC item pointed out: These hackers who want ransom generally do not toss stolen info online at first. They will publish some stuff to prove that they did indeed get access to actual information but it's not in their interest at this point to do more with the data while they're waiting to see if there will be a payment. Not sure what happens next, but it is NOT unprecedented for schools to pay ransoms for data. A university iin California paid to get back access to research data that had been locked by hackers. I think that a North Carolina school district also paid ransom after a hack. |
Wow, article indicates students disciplinary actions compromised.
“But there's also personal information that includes letters regarding disciplinary actions against 15 different students and their grades.” |
“It's more concerning for the staff whose social security numbers could be exposed, whose salary information could be exposed," he said.
FCPS employees should be alerted to this. |
not much they can do about Russians, Iranians, North Koreans or Chinese hackers unless the local government decides to care |
I love that staff is finding this out from Facebook instead of our employer. A heads up would have been appreciated. |
I wonder if FCPS being in the national news had anything to do with it? |
“FCPS said it has not notified staff because it’s investigating the attack.” Not the right move. |
So what exactly would an employee do? Seriously. What would knowing that there was a hack that MIGHT have access to employee info? |
