“FCPS said it has not notified staff because it’s investigating the attack.”

Not the right move.

So what exactly would an employee do? Seriously. What would knowing that there was a hack that MIGHT have access to employee info?

Start here,

There’s nothing here about what someone would do if their employer told them today that they might have been hacked. I don’t see any next action step in the link posted.

"FCPS can't catch a break"?? More like FCPS is a mess and their IT is a bigger mess and none of this is surprising.

Exactly- I’m not surprised this is happening. Brabrand needs to go and so does the new legal counsel.

It’s interesting that they didn’t “lock” critical components like most groups do when they target large entities. Either they didn’t have access to much or it hasn’t been made public yet. Attackers know the publicity and the loss of service is great enough to put more pressure to pay up. Baltimore is an interesting study where they didn’t.

I worry about all the kids. They are minors and their SS info is with FCPS along with confidential medical information and all their contact info. No one is checking their credit reports regularly. So much easier to steal their identify than an adult’s. Not to mention the disciplinary info that was already leaked. Why is no one upset about that? Teacher’s salaries are a matter of public record. I could get the entire school systems salary info if I truly wanted it.

We’ve never had to provide our kids SS numbers to the school. What are you talking about?

Dear FCPS Community and Staff,

FCPS recently learned that ransomware was placed on some of our technology systems. We are taking this matter very seriously and are working diligently to address the issue. We currently believe we may have been victimized by cyber criminals who have been connected to dozens of ransomware attacks in other school systems and corporations worldwide. We are coordinating with the FBI on the matter.

At this time, our investigation of the issue is ongoing and we are working diligently to determine the impact of this incident on FCPS data. We have retained leading security experts to help us determine the nature and scope of the incident and recover from the situation.

FCPS is committed to protecting the information of our students, our staff, and their families. We will work with law enforcement to the fullest extent to prosecute any individuals or groups that attack our systems.

+1 True.

Maybe I’m naive and my kids don’t have any confidential medical issues other than peanut allergy and asthma but what other info could hackers get about our children. We have iphones and Facebook, so I imagine their pics are already out there. And the yearbook pics are Staged-looking and honestly doesn’t really look like them anymore.

This is unwarranted. Criminals figured out how to hack into the FBI, Target and hundreds of other organizations.

You could not pay me enough to be FCPS Superintendent.

Coming at the school board meeting on 9/15: revising the history curriculum, TJ admissions changes and school renaming. *facepalm*

Not a matter of getting a break. It's just plain incompetence.
