Stop bullying this parent. The article is not analogous AT ALL. It concerned a homeless mom who registered a child at an address of a person who was not the parent.

OP, register your kid at any school in which district one parent lives. Yes, the rules often (but not always) say bona fide residence is where child spends 50% plus time, but it doesn’t say anything about the Sun to Fri BS teacher mentioned above. It can include holidays, summers, etc.

In any case, I’ve been divorced for 10 plus years and no school has ever asked me for divorce decree showing custody - just utility bill, lease, etc. to show residence at address.

TBH, prosecution of a non-resident custodial parent when the custodial parent lives and pays taxes in the school district in which the child attends is very unlikely. There’s no way for the state that it lost anything financially. It would make the state look terrible. It would force the state to inquire into the day-by-day custodial arrangements of thousands of children. And, it’s probably family status discrimination.

OP - you cannot get a change of school assignment from one school district to another, usually just between schools within the same school district.

COSA - which is what it’s called in MCPS, is typically only valid for a year or until the next matriculation point and is only available for unusual circumstances. (Divorce, childcare, my kids friends go to this school, etc. are not “unusual” circumstances.)

MCPS is not going after students and making them count how many days in a year they live with one parent or the other - as long as one parent is living in the school catchment.

This was in Connecticut. They are particularly territorial about school districts, and especially if you are from Bridgeport, Hartford or New Haven, and/or your skin color is not white.

It's OP here. I didn't write what the jail person keeps referring to. The way the catchment areas are set up, if child 1 is in the right catchment area for middle school, child 2 will be out of the catchment area for elementary, and vice versa. The only way to keep each kid in their original school is having one kid live with one parent and the other kid live with the other parent which is ridiculous and is not going to happen.

Ugh. You are a prime example of the terrible, racist, discriminatory teaching and administrating that exists in MCPS. Treat people like humans and help them with their problems that are making them not attend school.

I say this as a parent of a child who rarely attended a full day of school in jr and Sr year of HS. DC could have attended more but MCPS was not compliant with disability/accommodation law and repeated violated privacy obligations, causing school alienation. Our story is common.
