The friend/boss is so shady. He didn't attend his memorial service or funeral, wtf? One theory is that he fell/was thrown from a helicopter:

There's a book written about the case and the author did an AMA on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnsolvedMysteries/comments/hqj3kk/ama_mikita_brottman_author_of_an_unexplained/

After looking at the evidence she concluded that the most likely explanation was Rey had a psychotic episode and jumped. Apparently forensics concluded he could have made the hole with a running start from the roof. And there were some aspects of strange/paranoid behavior leading up to his death. There are certainly some uncertainties but it does seem most likely it was unfortunately a suicide.

Wasn't the distance 45 feet across to the hole, how is that even possible? His injuries weren't consistent with that type of death. How could his phone and glasses be untouched with that kind of fall, and outside of the hole?

Isn’t it possible he set those items down before making a running jump? I too am thinking this is the most likely scenario though I wonder how he got up to the roof without being noticed, what the phone call was about etc.

What do y’all think about the GA hairdresser? Both the husband and son seemed so strange.

Agree. I felt the wife and family were in a little bit of denial. Also wonder why there was no interview or even more info from the house guest who was there when he ran out abruptly. If she was staying in their house she probably witnessed odd behavior at some point.

The death definitely impacted the son deeply. He came across as still numb from it 15 years later. I don't trust the husband. The whole ashes scene was bazaar. I really felt he had something to do with it. To lock a teenager out of the house and not let him get his things or anything of his mothers after her disappearance/ death is cruel.

It's clear they strongly disliked each other.

I think Netflix probably (understandably) sensationalized some aspects of the case for the show. According to the author - who looked deep into the evidence for years - forensics concluded that he could have made the hole with a running start and he had to be traveling 11mph. And the injuries were all consistent with a fall from that height according to the ME (the author had never heard about the shin breaks being inconsistent and that is apparently not in the report). As for the phone and glasses - still unclear. Perhaps they were in his pocket and only fell out closer to the bottom? There are definitely a lot of unknowns as far as the timeline and certain aspects but looking at the evidence it seems the most likely conclusion was that he jumped from an apparent psychotic break.

I believe the phone, glasses and sandals were outside of the hole, but on the same roof, so no he couldn't of sat them down. I really do not think he jumped. The coworkers just randomly saw his sandals outside of the hole?

He knew something. Got beaten to death, then it was staged to look like a suicide.

Why would his boss put a gag order on employees if they didn't know anything?

Apparently the boss was concerned about the stability of his company, which was already tenuous, and wanted to distance it from the tragedy. A bit cold maybe, but could have been purely a business decision. But not communicating with the wife and not attending the services does seem weird and suspicious.

The husband is suspicious. A daytime abduction, her wallet untouched but missing wedding ring, rumors she wanted a divorce. He seemed like a sociopath too, so cruel toward her son.

But, to access the roof he would have had to enter the building to even get up there. He wasn't on any of the hotel footage. They were fairly certain he never entered the building. I don't think he killed himself. Didn't the investigators say his glasses and phone looked like they were strategically placed beside the hole?

Someone from work called, triggering him. The fact that no one admits to calling him is suspicious in itself.

No way he just decided to go to this random spot and jump. There are much better places to jump. Someone called to get him there.

PP here. There is someone who posted on Reddit who used to work at the Belvedere and having a colleague seeing Rey that night at the hotel bar: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnsolvedMysteries/comments/hnsvr1/more_details_on_the_rey_rivera_case_from_m/fxdm47n/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Though of course this is the internet and I don't think the account has been independently verified.

How he would have gotten onto the roof is a question, but the author of the book does not seem to think it would be as difficult as everyone is anticipating: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnsolvedMysteries/comments/hqj3kk/ama_mikita_brottman_author_of_an_unexplained/fxzfnty/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

I can't believe the French guy got away with murdering his entire family. What a monster. I hope someone identifies him after all this time, but he's probably sitting pretty in Buenos Aries or somewhere similar.
