JefCup is doomed

Our coach was worried more about the kids fitness levels (or lack thereof) after the break such that a bunch of games jammed together in a short period of time was just an invitation to injury.

What kind of injuries are players more likely to get if they play soon after a big layoff?

At minimum, muscle pulls / tears that can take some time.

Most major clubs are following return to play guidelines that are minimum 6 weeks - which for MD and VA meant sometime in June. Of course, the reality is many families are going to Beach / family I etc so for most kids it’s not a consistent 6 weeks. Then add on summer evening t storms - a lot of practices get cancelled. I think you really need a good 8 weeks given the variables. Our coach has been stressing fitness levels in general in return to play and has not ramped up fast.

Plenty of clubs going. Nothing but a bunch of scared people here that don’t realize California, Texas and Florida have nothing to do Virginia. Many here also don’t understand the rise in cases is due to “Probable Cases” which is based on computer models using Contact Tracing. Many people here don’t realize the deaths are continuing its trend downward.

And many people here choose to keep they’re kids inside while depression deepens because parents lack the time to research things themselves on the CDC website.

You people are miserable. Outdoor Youth sports are fine. Bars, clubs, restaurants and indoor events are not.

I wonder what Michael Jordan would say?

Who is going? Please list names? I hear that some clubs are pulling out.

Richmond Strikers, FCV, Arlington, Pipeline, and Bethesda from our area. Have not heard about Loudoun. Some Maryland United teams are not going.

Kids are just not in shape to go and play a tournament. On top of hotel stays and increased Covid exposure jumping into a tourney with little real contact training is just an injury in the making for lots of older kids.

Take Covid out of the equation and the injury risk alone makes the tourney a bad idea for lots of kids.

Sorry but schools and clubs typically do two week practices before doing a tournament or beginning the season.

Sort of. Our school has (well, had) optional practices several days a week and fitness and weight rooms throughout the Summer, followed by a one week camp away and a couple weeks before schol started. Our former club (DA) started six weeks before the season, though kids had fitness routines they did all Summer and we did have some scrimmages after about three weeks.

Considering the non-existent spring season ending in March after minimal Jan-Feb practices and the short lead up time to Jeff Cup no, kids have not experienced this amount of lay-off before a tourney before.

Most seasons end in mid-late June so kids are mostly just off a month to a month and a half. Less so if kids play Super Y or other training and soccer camps.

You are free to do what you want of course but our club is not attending and I agree with the injury risk. I’d much rather clubs focus on getting some scrimmages together, stay local and accomplish the same thing essentially for free.

As a showcase it will bomb and as a tournament it will be subpar and even considering it nothing more than scrimmages it just isn’t worth the money.

There just are few compelling reasons to play in it.

Agree, DA clubs as well as ECNL do train over the summer. While not mandatory kids just don’t stop playing in a organized setting the way we have been the last 3-4 months.

Even the earliest kids have been able to train with their team now has been mostly drill based without scrimmaging. That helps but it isn’t the same fitness that a real practice provides.

The only question is that there is literally six weeks between now and the younger girls JefCup. That is more than enough time.

It just isn’t worth the money. They are very expensive scrimmages. Do you really want your kids first game action since as long ago as December or November to be a Showcase in August?

No league games, summer practices during the summer when people are also traveling.

It is just a dumb idea. I’m not rolling my kid out in front of college coaches in first action in Months.

Shake the rust off in scrimmages that can be better controlled. Again, you are free to do whatever you want but respect the variety of reasons why many clubs and teams will not attend. It isn’t all “fear” based.
