I don’t understand the mindset to avoid wearing one. I’d rather my kid be as protected as possible and protect others from spreading the virus. Geez even a bandana is better than nothing. |
This makes no sense to me. How hard is it to wear a mask. Kids are going to need prompts and they’re going to forget the rules. But wearing a mask is no big deal. I get that it takes a minute to learn how to breathe. But it it’s not a difficult thing to learn.
I work as an artist that uses a lot of glass powders. You have to wear a mask for this work. Never once have I ever attended a class or taught one where the students couldn’t wear the mask. For hours on end. The difference between that and COVID is that people want to learn to work with glass powder. But with COVID, people want excuses. And it’s ridiculous. It took my kids less than a minute to figure out how to breathe in their masks. I like PPs idea that if you’re too fragile to wear a mask you’re too fragile for in person learning. |
Our culture and society is filled with spoiled, entitled, selfish people. That's why it won't work in this country, yet other countries can ask this of their people and not have so many that feel they shouldn't have to. We also are a society of not very bright people (in my opinion), that have started equating the freedoms we are afforded in this country with the freedom to do anything they damn well please and to have everything that they want handed to them on a silver platter. "Give them an inch and they will take a mile". |

You're a jerk. My kids are absolutely going to wear masks and they can. But many people with autism and other disabilities truly can't due to sensory issues. My BIL, who is an adult with ASD, is struggling with this tremendously. He's going to wear a face shield when he returns to work, but the reason he can tolerate it with practice is in part because he's a grown man. Are you saying all kids with genuine disabilities that would prevent them from wearing a mask at school should stay home? Aren't those some of the kids who need in person services most? |
We should find alternatives like face shields for those with sensory issues. No one should be exempt. It only takes one person to spread the virus. If you don't want school to be interrupted then wear a shield or a mask. |
This is too draconian. The kids who have genuine sensory issues might also not be able to wear a face shield. They are also most likely MOST in need of in-person learning. If you have a diagnosis, you don’t have to wear mask. No need to stomp on kittens. |
Kittens are vectors. No one is saying stomp on them. They do have to mask up. If that can’t be accommodated, distance learning is an option. |
Over 30 calls? In one week? 2 months before school begins? Not believable.

I don’t see this being a huge issue in the DC area. Kids without masks will be teased and ostracized so the only ones going without will be the ones who truly can’t tolerate it. |
I've got a 2 year old on the autism spectrum. We're doing early intervention with Infants and Toddlers, but there's only so much you can do with any toddler. There's no way to keep a mask on this kid. I don't know what I'd do if the county was actually trying to enforce masks for everyone above 2 at daycares. We've still got to work. Obviously he's not in school yet, but I could easily see this being just as challenging for an older child. |
It’s not about education, it’s about public health. I am all for accommodations to facilitate learning. However, that stops when accommodations for one child puts everyone else at risk. You really don’t see a difference between providing a para or extra time on exams and literally making other people sick??!!?? So, yes, if the kid can’t wear a mask, they absolutely should stay home. This has nothing to do with being deserving or having a legitimate disability. It has everything to do with public heathers and containing a pandemic. |
In China in the spring all of the children wore masks. No masks. No school. If child cannot manage a mask parent should keep child home and hire a tutor to home school the special needs child. We are in a pandemic. |

The virus is stupid and non-thinking. It does not care what anyone's diagnosis is. No mask, no school. |
