Elementary School-Aged Kids
| tell the school to call your DH next time (because it sounds like there will be a next time) |
She is way too old to be reminded to try at school. Your expectations are for 3-4 yos, not reasonable for a teacher with 30 5-6 year olds to manage. You should remind her at home if this is needed. 2-3 pee accidents and a both accident 6 weeks into the school year is really, really abnormal. Maybe you should talk to your pediatrician about this. |

No, OP, this is not something "school nurses are used to" as every single PP has pointed out.
It's only October. Are you saying she's had 3 accidents this school year? You need to schedule pediatrician appointment and a meeting with school to work out strategies to resolve this. Maybe she needs a 504? |
P.S. soon we will have no public school teachers left (why would anyone want the job?) and you are one of the parents we can thank for that. |
| Be the Mom. Pick up your kid and take care of your kid. |

This is not the job of school nurses and not the job of the
Kindergarten teacher. |
| She may not be ready developmentally for kindergarten. |
| Agree-if she has had three pee accidents and needs to be reminded to use the bathroom--another year of preschool might work better for her. |
| I don't know if I--an adult--would be able to clean myself up using just toilet paper (all that is available in the school bathroom) after peeing and pooping all over myself--did she have a change of shoes, too? I cannot imagine a 5 year old is capable of doing this. |
| So sorry, OP. You are probably getting some bad news here that you were not expecting. Hope your daughter is OK. |
ES nurses are not used to this. Maybe a kid with epilepsy soiling themselves mid-seizure. |
| I am also sorry that you are getting blasted, but they are correct. I teach in an elementary school and most students have zero accidents at that age. You should talk to your pediatrician. |
| Get your daughter some help. |

I don't want to pile on, but it seems OP needs a little bit of a pile on.
This is not something ES teachers are paid to deal with, and not something an ES nurse is really equipped for or interested in handling. It is also not common for a typically developing 5 year-old who is not dealing with trauma and is not in their very first school environment to have three accidents by early October. You need to have your eye on this, either by talking to the pediatrician or by talking to your daughter about using the available bathroom time. Maybe practice (role play) asking the teacher for permission to use the bathroom. |
| Some parents think school exists so that they can just drop off their kid and take off their parenting hat for 7 hours and just get to be "Annie Adult" instead of "Polly Parent". School is there to provide an education for children, not take care of every single parental responsibility parents assume they can abdicate to the school. OP is one of those parents. Guess what, OP? Your child is your responsibility. 24/7/365. No matter when your child soils herself, it is you or your partner's responsibility to take care of it. It is not the school's responsibility. Please get that through your head since it appears that you did not fully understand the responsibilities of becoming a parent when you made the choice to become one. |
