MSI use of new JWMS turf fields

Annual Grass Maintenance Costs are approximately $60/year if not more. Also, MCPS is able to rent out the turf field for a higher fee compared to grass fields. MSI basically paid 10 years worth of exclusive turf field rental by paying for the field construction. Note: Julius West has priority use of the field over MSI. When you rent a field or facility, you don’t pay for the maintenance of it. It’s part of the fee you pay to rent the field.

+1. I can’t believe people are falsely claiming that the turf maintenance cost will come out of teachers’ salary. So stupid!

Where do you think it comes from? Pots of gold at the end of rainbows? Of course it takes away from teacher salaries. The Operating Budget pays for maintenance and that's the budget that pays teacher salaries. Less for teachers is less for teachers.

I assume you meant $60,000 ($60K) per year. That about right.

Wrong. It's a middle school, not a high school football field. Julius West doesn't have a $60,000 field budget.

There aren't any renters of artificial turf fields. That hasn't happened. No income from these fields comes in.

So you’re tell g me that Potomac Soccer and Bethesda Soccer have been using WJ, RM, Wootton and other HS turf fields for free all of these year?

Remember they prepaid. You know that. So stop lying. The issue is that the fields were supposed to bring in additional rental income to pay for the replacement of the fields
when they failed. That didn't happen. Replacement is hundreds of thousands or a million dolllars and the rental fees brought in only $40,000. Do the math.

Replacement of the WJ, RM, Wootton and all other artificial turf fields now has to come out of the MCPS Operating Budget because the rental income never materialized. At one time, Joshua Starr used profit from field trips to pay for artificial turf.
Using the MCPS Operating Budget money means taking away from funds that could be going
to pay for teacher salaries.

That's a link to CUPF, not to MCPS. CUPF collects those fees and gives a small percentage of that money, if there is any, to MCPS.

Now go find the line item in the budget that shows how much of those imaginary rental fees were ever actually collected. It's $40,000, not $4 million.

That’s on MOCO County Council. Just like when you pay Federal Taxes. The Treasury (IRS) collects the money and Congress distributes to the various agencies.

And where did you get the $40K number from? Let’s pretend your number is correct, then isn’t the $2.4M that MSI gave to MoCo huge awesome amount?

Then show up to MOCO County Council meetings and demand that more money should go to MCPS or JW. MCPS is doing a horrible job of asking for more money too.

Please show me the sources that show grass or turf field maintenance will take away from teachers’ salary.

+1000. Coming here complaining won’t get MCPS/JW more money.

Also, MoCo is apparently not charging a high enough fee for grass or turf field rentals then since you said it’s not enough.

No, it is not a huge awesome amount. It is a huge liability. The money only paid to install the artificial turf fields. It does not pay for maintenance, removal or replacement.

Again, see the WJ, RM, Wootton high school artificial turf fields. Installed and then abandoned. Those fields must be maintained, removed and replaced out of the MCPS Operating Budget because the whole fantasy artificial turf plan failed. Rentals did not materialize, rental income did not fund maintenance, removal or replacement.

Creating a liability for the MCPS Operating Budget is not awesome. It is a continual drain of education funds to an artificial turf field when that money could be used to pay for teachers or give teachers raises. MSI Soccer is making a choice for how the MCPS Operating Budget will be used. They want money to maintain, clean, remove and replace their field surface, classrooms be damned.

Hey, you just contradicted yourself there. Rental fees, whether is prepaid or not is still rental fee.

Would you rather that MCPS spend their own money instead of taking MSI money to build the turf fields? MSI is not making a choice. They just paid $2.4M based upon a settlement agreement with MoCo. It’s on MoCo and MCPS to determine if the agreement was advantageous before they agreed and signed on the dotted line.

If the field is to be used sole by MSI and no other can use it including any MCPS or JW indefinitely, then might go along with your argument. But this field belongs to MCPS and JW has priority use. MSI can only use it for 10 years not indefinitely.

If the JWMS fields last 10 years as expected, then you just ask MSI to pay for the replacement when their 10 year contract is up. The maintenance cost of a synthetic turf field is far less than grass. You just have to run a brush cart over the turf to even it out once in a while and disinfect (never seen that done tho). Mowing, fertilizer, aerating, repairs, and seed can get pretty expensive for grass.

haha You are so bad at math. Where did you go to school?

Artificial turf fields cost money to be installed.

Then, the rental fees were to pay for maintenance, removal and replacement.

MSI is only paying to install the fields. They are not paying for maintenance, removal and replacement. The fields are not being rented so the rental fee doesn't matter, there is no demand for these fields. No rental fees means the money for maintenance, removal and replacement comes from the MCPS Operating Budget.
