S/O Why do more females go to college than males nationally?

Video game addiction, weed, juul seem to plague young men 100x more than young women.

Girl smoke weed and juul at the same rate. they drink more.

While girls game less, they bully more and use boys/sex to build up their self esteem to have it end up in the trash more.

Another reason:

Diploma mills target their recruiting toward women. Take a look sometime at the advertising for these places.

Because men can make a decent living in trades and women are less inclined to do so.

Because the "female" equivalent of decent-earning middle-skill jobs requires an associate's in many cases, but the male equivalent does not. See: allied health jobs such as dental hygienist.

There has been a huge push on getting females into post secondary education, particularly stem and medicine and a couple other areas that were more male oriented.

There hasn't been a push to get more males to college.

High schools focus more on female learners and on engaging females. There is a higher high school drop out rate for males.

I don't know if there is a gender gap at the community college level. It is more at the 4 year degree level.

The sex ratio is very close to 1:1, there is a small excess of males born over females. Definitely nowhere close to 60-40.

This is an interesting question! I will be reading the thread with interest.

This, though too lazy (hey, I’m a guy) to find a link that supports it. Just an unscientific observation from watching my five kids and their dozens and dozens of friends, and my wife’s experiences as a teacher for a couple of decades. Even the not-so-bright girls get good grades because they are organized, never miss out on the free points like do/didn’t do homework assignments, and have enough performance anxiety that they won’t just give up and accept the B or C. The guys have the homework balled up in the bottom of their bookbags that they completed but forgot to turn in.

Also unscientific, but read Pinocchio, in the time when girls were denied education it was expected that boys would need to be flogged into submission, or they'd pawn their school books and spend their days gambling and smoking. My son actually hasn't given me much trouble, but I relate.

1. Because the trade jobs for women suck and pay little. It is easier for a man to break into plumbing or electrical work. Have you noticed who always holds the stop sign at a construction project?

2. School rewards the well-behaved and obedient. So on average, girls do better in elementary school.... high school. This sets them on the path to college success in greater numbers than the boys.

Why is this? What are male high school graduates doing? Do they eventually go to college? If so, wouldn't the ratio be 50 - 50?

Distribution of intelligence for boys is more spread out than girls so the boys at both ends of the curve don't make it to college or drop out either because it is too boring or too difficult.

Wut?

Not the PP who wrote this, but it's true. Basically males tend to be more skewed than females. Not just in intelligence, but in other areas as well. It's why there is such extremes among men, such as having a large proportion of men in jail, drug addicts, abusers, etc., plus a large percentage who are very stable. Women don't fall into such extremes as men do.

Women are more likely to do what they are "supposed" to do, and nowadays, everyone is supposed to go to college.

This, men have a much higher number of "issues" than women do.

Even if a woman was inclined to do so, the best trade jobs are often controlled by guilds and unions, and it is a lot easier to "get in" as a man.

All colleges, with the exception of technical colleges, have higher rates of women now.
