Men don’t control the trades anymore. Women are free to become welders, electricians, sheet metal workers, plasterers, bricklayers, and the like. |
| Some colleges—big state universities—still appeal to men. |
Really? So the reason so many women choose to "lean out" from work is because their husbands are such lazy bums? It can't possibly be because their priorities shift once they have children? |
The big state universities, with the exception of the ones with large engineering programs, are still majority female. |
Another teacher here, and this is 100% correct. |
Do a tiny bit of research before posting. Just a tiny bit. “Women in construction make up 1.2 percent of all skilled workers. To break it down even further, here’s how women are represented in five popular skilled trades: welders, 4.8 percent; electricians, 2.4 percent; carpenters, 1.7 percent; plumbers, 1.6 percent; HVAC technicians, 1.2 percent.” https://careerschoolnow.org/careers/women-in-skilled-trades#statistics-of-women-in-skilled-trade-jobs Considering women in these trades is a pretty new development, it is safe to assume top management is still dominated/controlled by men. |
Newsflash. Pretty much everyone on this site is a woman, and many of us have had much different experiences than you have. |
What stereotypical female jobs require a $$$ degree? |
Oh let's get real here. How many women really want to become construction workers? |
Very few. Which is why more women go to college than men. And we've come full circle. |
Come full circle how? |
That's fantastic! Unfortunately, that opportunity was not available to all women across the US. Not in the 40's, 50's, 60's... In the 80's my parents had to argue to get me into the advanced math track. Even though my older brother was automatically put in the advanced math track and we had similar test scores and my grades were always better than his. |
Newsflash. Research shows that women can be sexist. Living in an environment created by your oppressor shapes your brain. Studies show women and men judge women more harshly than they judge men. https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/early/2012/09/14/1211286109.full.pdf "Faculty participants rated the male applicant as significantly more competent and hireable than the (identical) female applicant. These participants also selected a higher starting salary and offered more career mentoring to the male applicant. The gender of the faculty participants did not affect responses, such that female and male faculty were equally likely to exhibit bias against the female student." |
| Women are more willing to postpone immediate gratification for long term larger gains. Women are generally better supported by families for longer periods of time so that they can establish a firmer financial footing that includes higher education. |
That’s not the point. The point is there are living wage trade jobs that attract more men than women, reducing the desire to go to college for $100k+. I’d venture to guess many women would pursue many of those trade jobs if there was greater parity. Until that happens they need to get a degree. $50k as an electrician with no student debt, the ability to own your own business and determine your schedule- sounds ideal for many women |
