Unpopular Opinion: Weightloss

If weight loss was so easy than there wouldn't be all these fad diets and there would be skinnier people.

Well, to be fair cake has a lot of carbs...

It’s the sugar and the grains. It really is that simple.

Unless you have metabolic or thyroid problems.

I watch my skinny friends eat dessert, drink alcohol and soft drinks, while I drink my yummy water. And am still "fat."

True, but most people don’t really have metabolic issues. Once your thyroid level are controlled you can absolutely lose weight.
And yes, I have hashimotos and lost weight just fine when I watched my diet and stoped blaming my thyroid

Unpopular opinion: far, far fewer people 1. have an actual “thyroid problem” that 2. directly affects metabolism (“weight loss”) than claim they do. Maybe look elsewhere? Or switch endocrinologists?

— someone who reads and interprets labs results daily

Yep, I see weight loss beginning atv1120 and that’s before the plateau.

Plateaus happen because you stop being as accurate with what you’re eating. Not because you suddenly can’t lose on a low calorie diet.

Also, unless you are really short the reason you can’t lose on a low calorie diet is because you are actually eating more than you think. It’s also really hard to stay so low calorie for long enough to lose weight.

Nope. Most cultures on the planet eat plenty of grains, and aren't fat. It's the excess calories that make people fat. It's not rocket science.

It's not possible to lose weight without being hungry sometimes. And that's good, because effective diets also rewire your body's hunger signals so that they stop sending false alarms.

You probably shouldn't "listen to your body" if you're overweight. Your body is often a liar.

Positive self talk is essential to exercising effectively. The people who post nasty things to other people here are fat. How do I know this? Athletic people constantly tell themselves "you can do it, keep going" and it wouldn't occur to them to knock other people down. Give them real talk about weight management? Yes. Say they have fundamental personality deficits and can't do it? Never.

Sleep is way more important to weight management than people realize.

I think of it like a triad: basically I needed a good exercise plan, a good therapist, and Ozempic. I had to address all my psychological stuff first -- all the reasons why I ate, my inability to relax and take care of myself, plan, etc. ; Then I needed find an exercise plan I actually like, and gain some muscle mass, address all my physical issues -and then, I was in a space where I could begin to make good choices, eat healthy, etc.

DO listen to your body. Exercise, get your fruits and veggies and whatever else makes you feel genuinely good, and throw away your scale.

You can probably diet yourself thin, but so what? Focus on health, not weight, because there are all sorts of unhealthy ways to get thin and some healthy ways to be fat.

People don't want to hear that, but it's true. It's not a paradox, it's a fact: bodies look all sorts of ways, and you can't hate yourself or someone else into better health.

I feel fortified carrying extra pounds. First sign of cancer is losing weight, a lot, quickly. It was horrifying to live through with a loved one.

That's my unpopular and somewhat illogical opinion/mindset that keeps my weight on.

That's not the first sign of all cancers. You can have cancer quite a while undetected and without weight loss.

Telling morbidly overweight people to go to the gym is dumb. It won't result in weight loss and they should be focusing on reducing their calorie intake.

It is ok to only eat 1200 and even less if a person is not vigorously exercising and expends very little energy during the day like a day job. No a person won't starve or die.

Therapy doesn't result in weight loss. By the time a morbidly overweight person reaches adulthood, the issue is ingrained habits. Therapy doesn't change habits. Habits are really hard to break

I need a lot less food than I did younger. I find it hard to have to constantly deprive when I never needed to and was a completely normal weight.
