A 12 pack a week

So what you are saying is that everyone who commented that they do this never drives on the weekend.

Get real.

My husband probably drinks this much in light beer. We have a basement bar so sometimes we hang out there and watch sports or we Uber everywhere. Literally everywhere. There’s no excuse not to with the availability of Uber and Lucy. We both work in law enforcement so we will not drive after any kind of drinking.

Is that your official medical diagnosis??

That's great. Unfortunately, I cannot believe that most people are taking Uber everywhere on the weekend. Even at an increased weight and height, 6 beers of a day is being felt by the drinker, otherwise they would drink water. They aren't drinking it for the taste or hydration alone.

If it is hot out and I am drinking cheap, cold, lite beer, I probably drink a beer in 5-10 minutes, but I tend not to drink continuously. If I am drinking a nice beer I probably get a new one about every 30 minutes. This means if I have nothing else to do, I drink 4 beers while watching a game, of grilling and eating dinner with the family, or sitting on the couch with my wife watching a couple of mindless shows.

While I would love to have 3 chances a weekend to relax like that, it never happens. If I did, I would probably cut back on the drinking, because I would get fat. That said, I would not say that a person who did has a problem.

They have to get up too early and be productive, so they save the drinking for when they don't have to be up at 5 or whatever. Makes sense to me. I try to go easy during the week too, because my wake-up time is so early and I'm going-going-going all day. I'll let loose on a Friday or Saturday night off, and stay out a bit later if my schedule the next day allows me to get a decent night's sleep.

Ditto with myself and several people I know. A 12 pack of beer per week is really no cause for concern if all responsibilities are being met.

He is healthy, eats well, exercises 4 nights a week. It just seems like the older we get that 12 beers a week will catch up. He doesn't get super drunk, but he also drinks beers like double IPAs, Belgium, Imperial Stouts so we're are talking 10% alcohol beers which makes it seem worse. Does anyone else have husband's that drink this much and should I be concerned? When I brink my concerns he says he will cut back if it starts hurting his health or causing weight gain.

how many bottles of wine do you drink per week?

Doctor here. You’ve met me!
I teach my medical students that talking about addiction is more about the problems the drug is causing in someone’s life than it is about the amount they are using. What I would want to know is if he is missing work, missing out on responsibility around the house, OP is beggging him to quit or has threatened divorce, he has gotten a DUI, put the kids in danger because he was intoxicated, etc.

He is fine as far as those things you brought up. He never misses, is late with kids. No DUIs. He never drinks and drives, he's lost a few relatives from drunk drivers so he takes drinking and driving seriously. . He occasionally has a beer in the afternoon, but he usually does his drinking at night time when the kids are asleep and we are watching Netflix.

He is in good shape. He is 5'10 and very fit. Eats healthy and drinks healthy otherwise. I'm just worried about the long term health risks.

If he drinks 12 beers a night, then worry. Being married to you, it might not be far off.

He's 6' and 250lb. He has a huge beer belly. Other than that, his annual physical exams indicate no harm. He doesn't drive home from the events but he's a fully functioning parent and adult after the beverages. There are times when he is able to function better than I can and I don't drink.

So, medically, there is nothing wrong with my DH.

The gut is going to hasten his death.

OP, 4 beers a night is a lot. IPAs are more like 5-7% alcohol than 10%, but it's still a lot.

Not to mention the state of his liver.

Double IPAs have higher alcohol content by volume than regular IPAs. I love beer, but it seems a bit excessive when he's drinking 144oz of beer like Imperial Stouts that have almost the same alcohol content as white wine. Per week! That's like 5 bottles of white. Yikes.

This doesn’t seem like that much to me? I thought that for men 1-2 drinks a day was ok so this averages out over the course of the week...

I might suggesti non-drinking activities outside the house for some of the weekend ..we often have things planned so DH can’t really drink 4 beers every day of the weekend KWIM? Maybe he will have a few on Fri and Sat night if we are hold but not usually on sunday..we are usually out. Or we are out or doing some sort of family activity sometimes on Fri or Sat night. If we are home, no big deal, but we aren’t home all weekend long to be able to do that every day.

I wouldn’t make a huge deal upfront about a 12 pack a week because it will make you seem like a total nag. it really isn’t a huge amount in and of itself. It is more the pattern of drinking every day on the weekend that is a bit of an issue IMO so maybe you can skirt around it.

He may be in good shape, but that is a lot of high alcohol content. Maybe as he gets older and gains weight and starts having some problems he will cut back. I would definitely be concerned, but if he is helping, staying in shape and not having problems I wouldn't divorce over it.

I do this but it’s one beer, fri/sat/sun. And maybe not Sunday.
It’s just easier to maintain my body weight when I don’t imbibe during the week, even one. It’s not the calories, I think the alcohol does something to my metabolics.
When my little one start some noisy fighting, I always say “and they ask me why I drink!”
Also despite being 6’3 and 198 lb, I’m really sensitive to alcohol. Like, 2 IPAs and it’s nap time.
