| They stopped in 2nd grade. |

Travel tournaments only give 1st and 2nd in tournaments to a medal. The other 8 teams nothing as it should be.
My kid refuses the 2nd place medal. I have found them in the trash. |
I don't think anyone is talking about awards in high school and college. The participation awards are almost always from recreational sports teams (rather than competitive leagues) and are usually given to kids in elementary school and sometimes middle school. |
| My 12yo just tossed hers. |
If my kid did something that showed that bad sportsmanship, they would be off the team. |
+2 Personally, I never saw the trophy as a kind of fake award, it's just a memento of the season. Accept it graciously, keep it if you want or don't. |
| My kid wants to trash all her actual trophies, or the dozens she won for tournament wins etc |
|
I like The Not Its' take on it:

Seriously. You obviously did something wrong with your kid, pp. What a rotten attitude. |
Well, honey, he accepts it in person and when we get to the car he ditches it. |
Still awful. |
We give those away, too. We’re not hoarders. If you don’t want it, give it to someone who does. |
When kids are little, it's a memento. But when/if they earn trophies and medals, at least for my kids, they see the old participation trophies as meaningless. Probably because they have other mementos that are more meaningful. Like tshirts. So many freaking tshirts. At least the tshirts store easily. |
| My kid never got participation medals - they were never offered by his soccer league or tae kwon do studio. |
| My kids are young and they go in the trash after a week or so. |
