I’ve lost 85 lbs on keto. I remember losing this much once before on WW and feeling starving in maintenance. I’ve decided keto is a permanent lifestyle change. Like OP, I realize how terrible I felt as a result of grains, carbs and being overweight. As a PP said, I’m so energized now by exercise and even a bad nights sleep doesn’t ruin my energy for the day.

I follow Ketogains so I do restrict fat and strictly counted calories before I was in maintenance. There’s no way around the calories piece. I don’t take exogenous ketones because I’d rather my body used it’s own ketones. I religiously weigh out salt and potassium (found in no sodium salt) and drink it in water with crystal lite all day, and take magnesium at night. I didn’t do that at first and wish I’d started it on day one because it makes me feel much better.

Im just looking into this diet and it seems overwhelming. To the PP: why are you restricting fat? I thought the whole idea was to have a fat per meal. I started to do the diet today sans animal protein and I feel really yucky. I do eat chicken and some meat, but not every day. Do you have to have these proteins every day? Today I had eggs, parmesan cheese and whole fat greek yogurt as my proteins. Oh and some almond butter. But is this enough? I had no carbs. Lots of veggies-- and now I feel bloated... May I ask: Why do you weigh out salt? Also do you take magnesium in pill form? Thanks... Just want to try this. I have celiac disease and don't have a lot of typical carbs, but I do eat a lot of fruit, rice cakes, tortillas, brown rice and sweet potatoes, so I guess those are all carbs. The only time I have EVER lost weight is when I have cut out sugar.... as I am getting closer to 50 and menapause, I want to start to watch what I eat more, but I don't know if this kind of diet is sustainable, particularly as someone who is not that crazy about animal meat (but I eat it along with fish). Thx for any ideas. Want to detox from all the sugar and alcohol from the holidays

I’m interested in learning more from people who use this to drop weight and then add back some heathy carbs.

I e come to. Relieve that there are no healthy carbs for me, above 20 or 30g a day. Leafy green vegetables and broccoli are it for me, plus in incidental
Carbs in the high fat dairy I enjoy. I've lost about 60 lbs, and have another 40
Or so to go. Even supposedly healthy carbs like beans spike my insulin and cause me to store fat. I'm not going back to that level
Of metabolic illness, ever.

Carbs are not an essential macronutrient. Many people can tolerate them but I've found I'm one of the people who can't. I love them, but it's how a crack addict lives crack or heroin addict lives heroin.

Read Why've awe Get Fat And What ago Do About It by Gary Taubes. So much good info about how menopause impacts fat storage and what you can do. Fasting and keto or LCHF are the answer!

Augh, sorry for all the typos. Autocorrect isn't correcting! Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It is the title.

The first couple weeks are awful - going off carbs makes you feel like you have the flu or a hangover.

If I had a keto / low carb chef, I would do it full time. instead I do 4-6 weeks of it then go back to regular eating until I feel fat and lethargic again and then I threepeat!

Interesting. This is what I have heard. Does the weight come back as quickly as some people say?

I am 42. The weight comes off quickly and comes back on even quicker. I lose / gain 10 lbs by starting / stopping keto / low carb.

I lost 20 quickly and then gained 25 even faster. NP here.

Of course the weight is going to come back on if you go back to your normal way of eating. You have to learn to eat in maintenance.

The weight definitely comes back on fast once you reintroduce carbs.

The point of ketogenic eating is that it's a way of life.
