MD kids lying to get into DC Schools

Anonymous
I know of three families who have been doing this for years. They all live in Md. One send their kids to a DC charter, the other two send their kids to Upper NW schools and on to Deal. I like the families, so I'm not going to report them, but I think it's really unfair. Here's a tip: they NEVER invite my kids to their house. And they're VERY vague about their address, and never accept my offer to drop their kids home.

They speed through the city, they have no regard for laws such as "DC Law: Stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk", they're mostly rude, many are employed in the ever expanding government, and they act as if PG is an extension of DC. It's not. I like on the Hill and see this everyday. People from PG speeding by Lincoln park, blaring loud family unfriendly music. Keep the crime and noise in your own county. Most of them abandoned the city when it was in a pretty bad shape and they look down on us who are "moving in to their neighborhoods". How can this be your neighborhood when you only show up on Sunday's to go to church?

I've wanted to say that for a long time. Getting off soapbox now.

Wow. Do you hear yourself? We all know what you really mean when say "people from PG".

So it is OK for these families to steal $200K per child from the city becasue you like the families . How about your neighbors who are paying DC taxes - do you like them?

When I was registering my dc for a charter school, there was another woman attempting to do the same for her dc. However, she had no proof of residency and said she was living with her "grandmother" in the city. She asked if a letter written by her grandmother stating that her and the child lived with her would suffice as proof of residency. I was incredulous when the school secretary said that was fine.

MD residents can apply to attend DCPS schools and pay tuition. How does everyone know that some of these folks with MD plates and birthday parties at Maryland residences aren't doing things above board? Yes there seems to be fraud but surely every single MD family with children in DCPS schools is guilty of that!

I grew up on Long Island - not too far from the Queens border. This was a problem in my school district that came to a head when there was a car accident with some high school students and they could not contact parents becasue forms were filled out fraudently.

After this, the school district sent a letter to all students and gave families a 2 week amnesty period to pull their children out of the school if they were enrolled but not residents. After that 2 weeks (where school enrollment decreased), if the district found out that you were enrolled but not a resident, they investigated and sued families for back tuition and services provided to their children. The threat of having to pay tuition (including back tuition) cleaned up the problem very quickly.

I did a reverse white pages look up of the address that a child I suspected lived in Md listed in the school directory, and it was not the parents' address. I called the confidential number and reported it. The child is not at the school this year. My school is a desirable school and I the Dc children who are out of bounds should have the spot. Not an out of state family.

Can you post the confidential number for reporting so that others will have this at their finger tips.

We are still at the point in time in the school year when it is easy for children to move in and out of schools. Let's not wait until the end of the school year to get these cheats out of the system (Note: I am referring to the parents not the children as the cheats)

Interesting - didnt know this was happening to such a large degree. I can't imagine choosing DCPS over our MCPS but maybe there are people who do it for convenience to work or something like that. In MCPS there seems to be some coming from DC but maybe they are paying the tuition.

well, then you are breaking the law.

You never break the law? Get off your high horse!

I, too, have MD tags but live in DC. It's a newer car and we haven't had the chance to get tags changed but I assure you that we live in DC. Pls make sure that when you are reporting people that you know beyond a reasonable doubt that they are committing fraud.

Are you people not changing your tags to avoid paying DC taxes? In that case its a much more serious crime than say jaywalking. I really hate people like that. I know of a few people that moved from Va but wont change their plates, I keep calling parking enforcement on them.

Paying what DC taxes? What are you talking about? I pay DC income tax, DC property tax, DC sales tax...what tax am I skipping out on bc I have yet to change my tags since recently moving.

Don't worry - when and if DC gets around to responding to a tip they will actually investigate it before just throwing a child out of a school. They may require you to show evidence of residency - a utility bill for example.

But please get your tags changed. Yeah - it sucks to go down to DMV, get your car inspected, get put into the jury pool every 2 years, vote in a place where you pay taxes and get no federal say in how it is spent - but this is part of being a resident in our community.

Not the original poster - but the right word choice is "fees" as opposed to "taxes" - fees for inspection, registration, liscense.
