Tips to stop hitting the snooze button?

You should never use an alarm clock. It is a horrible way to start the day. Your body has a very well developed internal clock, you just need to tell yourself what time you want to wake up, and it happens naturally.

You need more sleep. Like PP, I need closer to 9, but can function on 8.

Have you been checked for sleep apnea? You may not be getting quality sleep, making your body exhausted despite the amount of sleep. If you havn't, perhaps you can use a sleep tracker like a FitBit to get some data.

I got a Fitbit because it has the vibration alarm. It goes off 15 min before my phone does so I have some gentle nudges before the horrible loud one.

OP, I have the same issue. I've actually stopped hearing my iPhone alarm so hitting snooze is not a problem, but I never wake up on time. I bought a new alarm clock yesterday (extra loud!) and put it on the other side of my bedroom. It woke me up and then I went back to bed. Don't understand why I can't get my crap together in the morning!

I used to do that too. Then I discovered that I actually do need 9 hours of sleep minimum.

Experiment on a couple of weekends by allowing yourself to wake up naturally and see how many hours of sleep it took to for you to wake up with no alarm and ready to get out of bed. You might be surprised.

I used to stay up to watch the 10 o'clock news. I realized that the news is never good and it can wait till morning. I now make myself go to bed by 10:00AM. I'm feeling so much better.

Turn off the god awful beeping noise, set alarm 15 mins earlier and set radio alarm to a news talk show. Much easier transition.

What? You just magically wake up at 6:15 or whatever by telling yourself that the night before? Does not seem like this works or alarm clocks wouldn't exist.

Go to bed earlier and earlier until you wake naturally at the time you want to get up. I agree that you are probably not getting enough good sleep.

The only thing that works for me is to check my email after the alarm goes off. Even though it's all crap, I'm usually sufficiently motivated (maybe it won't be crap!). By the time I'm verified that it's all crap and deleted it all, I'm awake enough that I can drag myself out of bed. Or I see all the work emails and realize that life will be even worse if I don't get myself in to the office.

I used to have this problem. Tried hiding the alarm clock, setting multiple alarms, etc. I found myself setting my alarm 20-40 minutes early to make sure I'd manage to work through the snoozes and get up in time. Never worked. I was always tired, always rushed, and never felt rested.

I finally just vowed to myself that I'd never ever touch the snooze button again, and that I'd simply force myself get up when the alarm rings. It actually worked. I've been free of the snooze button for over 10 years now. An extra benefit is that I don't set my alarm 20-40 minutes early, and don't suffer through 10-minute snoozes, so I get more good sleep.

IMHO, the two keys are ...

(1) Set the alarm for the *real* time you have to get up, not some earlier time that allows for snooze button delays. The alarm goes off at the latest reasonable time. If you dare hit the snooze button, you will be late.

(2) Especially during the first month of this new routine, psyche yourself up the night before not to hit the snooze button. Remind yourself, and prime yourself, to jump out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. No lingering in bed to listen to the radio or check email. Immediately get in the shower or go make a cup of coffee.

Good luck.

For me, going to bed earlier, a programmable thermostat to warm up the room before it's time to get up and most important my programmable coffeemaker is set . I can faintly smell the coffee from bed and that really helps me get up. I like the idea of an alarm with a gradual light. My phone alarm slowly gets louder and it's a gentle song so I'm not shocked awake like I used to be from a buzzer or loud radio. My radio is set loudly for 10 minutes after my phone, so I want to get up and avoid that!
