Could a "western" woman wear a bikini in Saudi Arabia? is there a double standard? |
I agree in general terms. However, I do believe that one’s face/hair should be shown in pictures for govt. IDs (driver’s license/passports) and when boarding public transportation (planes, trains, buses). |
What does it matter that there is a double standard? Should the western world follow what the Muslim world does where it pertains to forcing women to wear, nor not wear certain garments? Is this a tit for tat situation? The western world is about freedom, as in, freedom to wear what we want to wear on the beach? If a French woman went topless in a non nudist beach in the US, she'd be arrested for indecency. Do we have a double standard? |
Saudi Arabia is about as oppressive as a government can get. No one would suggest they are an example for any country to follow. |
I think France is free to make rules France wants to live by. They suffer the consequences. Not our place to tell any country how much "freedom" they need practice. |
| France is usually pretty strict on Christian symbols as well- including in schools. Note, the nuns are wading, not swimming in their habits. I'm fine with it, yawn. |
Could a nun trot about with a Bible? |
Let's see we've spent the last eight years not playing into the extremists hands and where has that gotten us? Just today a young woman was murdered in a knife attack in Australia and a man injured while the suspect screamed the usual statement I refuse to type that we have all gotten to use to hearing. Virginia Beach just a week ago, and so on. It is time for us to stand up against the extremist's repressive ways and not tolerate that in our society. It is provocative, the authorities are correct and the people of France must be on edge and that is why the politician are trying to respond and create a safe environment. You worry about this woman's feelings, I pray for the emotional recovery of every victim's family that has experienced terrorism on their own streets in recent memory. My goodness, have a little sympathy for the other side for once. |

I am the PP who posted this. I am not the OP. Interesting the NPR reporter was asking the deputy mayor of Nice about the Nuns hypothetically. The reporter mentioned that she has seen pictures of nuns of the beach (did not say in the same beach) and asked how would it look if police were standing by a nun on the beach asking her to take off their head gear and robe? And the deputy mayor was responding with all kind of prejudice laden responses. |
I would not be surprised if Trump twits or shares this in rally as an example for US to follow. |
Then France shouldn't tell Muslim countries that they shouldn't tell women what to wear, or claim to be a free westernized country. IMO, no gov't should tell women what to wear. |
Having sympathy for one side doesn't mean I can't have sympathy for all sides. I don't worry about this woman's feelings. I worry about the fact that any gov't feels they can tell a woman what to wear or not to wear, just as I'd be worried about any gov't telling its people what religion they can follow, and how they can follow it (as long as they are not hurting others). |

No, we shouldn't. I for one do not like walking out of a Panera bread in Springfield with my young daughters and having a man "shoo" us away from the outside tables because his harm of burkas are eating outside with him and his other friends. Scared the crap out of my daughter and her friends, this is not the Middle East and I could care less about their repressive culture. |
Given your opinion, would you mind pointing me to your post protesting the gross injustice to females in those countries where they are forced to cover up? (I mean, since you're equally upset about that...) |
