But police are supposed to do good things and act appropriately. It shouldn't be newsworthy.

Or maybe it should. Because the preponderance of police violence stories is not proportional to the scale of these actual events. If we published every good police act that occurred at the exact same moment, it might be a good thing to demonstrate the ratio. This act will be addressed if it was illegal, but all the legal behavior should be recognized as well.

PP, I understand what you are saying, there's definitely news bias for sensational events, however, there is also racial bias in policing.

Philando Castile was stopped 46 times by police for minor and often made up traffic violations like a busted tail light:

That is not good policing--that is harassment and profiling. Stop and frisk laws--proportionally whom do you think was stopped and frisked?

I am grateful that we have police. They do put their lives at risk to protect the public. I am horrified by the deliberate targeting of law enforcement by criminals. However, there is an ever widening gap of racial injustice when it comes to policing. Being black shouldn't be a reason to be shot and killed.

It won't be addressed unless we change oversight for police. These should be investigated independently. You know who investigated shootings by police? The same police department! Do you see a potential issue here? There's evidence it's a big fucking issue.

Yes, I do. So advocate for that with your politicians. And I'd like to know who you would like to have investigate? A rapid federal response team that's unafiliated? Anyone who investigates policing is part of policing, but I can understand wanting a remove. However, your concern for how these bad apples are investigated is apart from the fact that these bad apples are few and far between. If you read articles about botched surgery every day you would never, ever want to go under the knife.

Oh okay thanks for the instructions. I am advocating. Maybe you should do the same. And yes, I think it should be investigated by a separate entity. The state can appoint independent people to do it (there are plenty of retired and other people with these skills and since it's SOOO rare to you, that shouldn't be a burden) or it should be done federally.

+1 . I've never seen such a profession where people constantly feel the need to preface apologies for costly and lousy behavior with ' there are good cops out there' , 'not at all cops are bad' and blah blah . Fucking disgusting

I agree. Get off dcum and start writing letters or petitions or run for office. In a coun try of 350 million, the vast preponderance of police work, or should we say police sacrifice and heroism as their lives are always on the line unlike yours or mine, was decent and dedicated.

Except that justice has not been done on the other crimes by police that have been caught on camera. Stop being an apologist for the police. Be outraged. Demand better for the citizens of the United States than this, again and again and again.

+1. Americans love their mediocrity. Demand better.

They dont do stop and frisk anymore. Policies do change. Unfortunately, crime is higher now in places where they stopped. I'm guessing you are ok with that trade off. Everything is a trade off .

If idiots can't do their jobs ( supposedly ) because of increased scrutiny which allegedly result in higher crime . I think it's a reflection of their lack of professionalism . Potential law breakers have no contract with society

I'm definitely, totally positive that someone will be held fully accountable for this heinous killing, and that justice will be served.

I like that you've really convinced yourself you have an excellent point here.

Most people, on most days, do not murder someone. For every story the news runs about a local murder, should they run 330 million stories about each American who made it through the day without killing someone?

Last year, there were 36.4 million safe airplane flights and only 81 plane crashes. Should the news only cover the plane crashes if it also runs 36.4 million stories about people who had uneventful flights?

I watched a news piece last week about someone who won a have lottery jackpot. Shouldn't they have also presented everyone who didn't win the lottery?

Planes sometimes crashing is a problem. And police officers sometimes shooting unarmed people who are holding their arms in the air and begging not to be shot is a problem. This would be true whether all cops did this or only one in a billion cops did this. Ratios have nothing to do with its newsworthiness.

P.S. I am SURE you also regularly rant after a terrorist attack that there isn't enough media coverage of Muslims not blowing stuff up. Because you're intellectually consistent like that.

Montgomery County sends their cases to Howard County for investigation and prosecution. If that model is sufficient, it would be a very easy thing for everyone all over the country to do.

I'm guessing justice won't be done even if the video shows a criminal act by the officer. Our country has a history of giving police officers a pass for even clearly bad acts. That has to be addressed, otherwise we're going to have more idiots taking justice into their own hands to right that wrong.

You probably also believe that Melania Trump's speech was personal and heartfelt.
