Inflexible family gathering

What's MIL's deal? If the point is a family gathering, just have a family gathering on the day that works for everyone!

Where do they live? I vote D. It's one weekend/party. I wouldn't schlep a new baby in holiday traffic for that.

SKIP

life is too short for shit like this

Skip it.

Terrible traffic weekend. I'd skip it.

Our families are relatively inflexible too. But, I have to say, I've never been sorry I sucked it up and went to the family event despite the inconvenience.

Actually, it's pretty much the definition of inflexible, especially with this much notice and given OP's situation. It's hardly 'ballsy'. It's a 4th of July party, not a wedding.

It's not a 4th of July party on the 3rd! People like family traditions like that.

My DS's birthday was yesterday. Most of his friends are out of town this weekend. We're having his friends over for a party with games, cake, candles, ice cream and a cupcake to take home. Are you telling me this can't be called a birthday party because it's not actually his birthday?

I think it's time for OP and her DH to create some of their own family traditions....skip the trip to the ILs.

This X 1,000,000. Won't traffic be hellish that Monday evening??
How old is your baby? I'd stay home, relax, and enjoy a low-key weekend.

Really? Really. You can't grill a few burgers and drink a few beers and use red, white and blue decor on the 3rd, and then have a nice breakfast and enjoy some leftovers and some fireworks on the 4th? You just can't? Because "tradition" trumps family?

Thank God your husband is on the same page as you!

I would not go this time, and I would have no regrets given that MIL put my back up.

Enjoy your Grand Canyon vacation!
