I think it's a pretty name. I'm Jewish, and I would definitely assume she was Jewish. Even if she'll have a clearly non-Jewish last name, I would probably assume mom was Jewish . Not sure if those connotations would be as strong for non-Jews who hear her name.

| I am not Jewish and would definitely think the child was Jewish. I would think it is kind of weird that you named you kid Shoshana and you are not Jewish. |
Who is now 40. Time flies. |
Her name is Jessica. Op, love the name but would think it was a bit weird to choose this name if you're not Jewish. But whatever. Still a really pretty name |
| A lot of names have Hebrew origin. |

Hi - OP here.
This name is for our daughter who we are adopting. Her birth mother made the suggestion because it works as a combination of my name and hers together. I thought that was very sweet. Our four other children all have three syllable names also. Here they are in case it helps with suggestions: Benjamin, Nathaniel, Miranda & Gwendolyn. Side note: Our daughter has Down's Syndrome so I just don't think she'll get a lot of questions in school about her name being Jewish and if an adult makes the assumption thats okay with me Jewish names are pretty. We are catholic but I'm cool with anyone named Mary.
Any other suggestions? I am open. She isn't due for 5 more weeks. |
| Don't like it. Sounds Jewish and it reminds me of an older woman named Shoshana. |
This a lovely story! Go for it, and best to all of you. |
+1 I also think of the big busted Seinfeld girl |
| Don't like it. Someone very strange in high school had that name. |
Yep. Super Jewish name...that skews slutty because of the Seinfeld girl. And if you aren't Jewish, it sounds weird. Just like Sinead Rosenberg sounds weird. |
Sounds antisemitic and ageist. |
No more than non-Jews naming their kids Levi or Asher, which are "in" names these days. Shoshana is a pretty name. I am Jewish and would assume the child to be either Jewish or evangelical Christian. But in this day and age it wouldn't be terribly surprising to find out she was neither. I am Jewish with a non-Jewish name (Katherine) and it has not been a problem. I get some questioning looks at synagogue and that's about it. I imagine it would work similarly in reverse for a non-Jewish child with a Jewish name. |
Fossils referencing Seinfeld .... |
| The origin story for this name makes me like it for your DD! Also, no one her age will have the Seinfeld connotation - that's already ancient history at this point and won't be relevant for them. It's really just people in their 30s and 40s now who will think of that. |
