Basis Mclean

I think they'll be closed in a year. Not enough people willing to pay tuition for a school they give away for "free" elsewhere.

It's going to be a disaster. For profit school. Charter school model. 30 year old principal. Let's see who enrolls.

That is an asinine thing to say. You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. BASIS has a great model and selective admissions will allow them to provide a great private school education. We are a former BASIS family who loved that the school, unlike others, doesn't teach to the lowest common denominator. They know what children are capable of and challenge them. Had Sean Aiken stayed as HOS for BASIS DC, we would still be there. He is a smart, dynamic, charismatic leader who was a teacher and is passionate about education.

And calling it an inner city charter school? Do you ever cross the river?

We're at BASIS DC, too, and it really does sound really funny to me calling it an inner city school! My sweet little blond, high SES kids just got some street cred, I guess.

I don't think you're paying tuition for Sean Aiken (though he is very good). I think you're paying tuition for the BASIS model as whoever the Head of School is will be backed up by BASIS Ed.

Why did you leave? How does anyone know Aiken will
Stay principal of McLean if he didn't stay in DC?

Challenging them? With what? 5 hours of homework each night? Relentless tests? No time for anything but studying? Absolutely zero balance? Hyped up competition between classmates? I guess that's fine if you want to take all balance out of your child's childhood so that they spend the rest of their lives regretting it.

Is this the same pp who called it an inner city? School? Believe me, in 4 years my DC has never had more than 2 hours of homework a night, takes an outside of school music class, plays baseball, attends Scouts,, takes one extracurricular at school and is on the honor roll. Balance is possible, especially if you cut down on the video games/Instagram/snapchat. It's called prioritizing education.

What grade does two hours of homework start?

It is an independent school and you pay tuition. It is on the website. I just looked yesterday. The independent schools are not run the same as the charters from my understanding of BASIS.

Read his bio. He seems to have a lot of experience. Have you seen how young some other Heads of Schools and Principals are?

Ha! I wish we could put money on that prediction.

Anonymous wrote:I believe there is no financial aid. They have opened other private versions in California & New York - so it will be similar. But yes, it is just like the DC charter but now you would pay.
From the website: At this time we do not offer any financial aid. We do offer tuition payment plans in one, two, or ten installations.

Here is the website for those who keep asking questions that are right on the website http://mclean.basisindependent.com/home/index.php

But essentially it is the same curriculum with a charter school principal classed up a bit, minorities removed, and now with a 25K price tag. Sounds like a marketing ploy to me.

It's not the same. The biggest difference being that BASIS DC is a public school amd therefore has to adhere to theDCPS district standards. Their teachers still have to make sure the kids can do PARCC and Common Core or whatever standardized tests they teach to. The BASIS Independent schools have more freedom because they're private. The teachers are given more autonomy in private school.
