I see more anti-Hispanic, anti- African American, anti-Muslim, and anti-Catholic sentiment on DCUM. The hatred of Latinos here is really shocking. Latinos appear to be the most hated group on DCUM and in America right now besides Muslims. |
I don't know about anti-Indian, but a lot of people I know who work in finance, which has a lot of Indians, seem to have had negative experiences with Indians. I cannot say though if they are just noticing experiences with Indians more (while, for instance, giving whites more of a pass) or if there really is something to this. |
In what world? Every time a black person is mentioned on DCUM, a cyber race war breaks out. Even when black people aren't relevant, someone will still bring up AAs at the first opportunity. It is very popular to shit on black people here while claiming you are talking about "culture," not outright race. |
This whole forum is anti- something or other. |
Are you sure they're Indian? I know a few Pakistani families who own a whole lot of 7-11s. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/166st1/not_meant_to_be_racist_why_do_immigrants_usually/c7tfljy |
did you read the article or just look at the pix? The reason why they did this is because people with money were cheating by buying off teachers, test proctors, etc... They wanted to level the playing field. Not saying it's right. But these people don't really have the types of opportunities we have here. But you are right, when groups of people cheat, generally people dislike them, kiind of like the big corporations or rich people that cheat on taxes and/or have offshore bank accounts to avoid US taxes. The public generally hate these kinds of people. |
+1 I'm not Indian. Why did you marry him if you find him annoying since you stated "them"? |
I don't know that I have seen any threads with anti-Indian sentiments.
I will admit that Asian ethnic groups (particularly Indians, Japanese, Chinese and Koreans) seem very concerned with money, status and achievements, even more so than many Americans. Some of this seems to relate to how they have more of a collectivist society, meaning a person's behavior can bring shame or pride upon their entire family. It seems to provide extra motivation to attain a strong standing in society, since you're not doing it just for yourself, but for your whole family. |
New poster and I agree that there are few Indian families living in the District proper. Most are smart enough to know you can get more for your money further out. |
Yes, this is generally true because those countries grew rapidly, and the wealth there is relatively new. I'm guessing that the noveau riche of the US back in the 1800's were regarded with much disdain by the upper class British. This is nothing new. Those cultures do highly value family over the individual. There are pros/cons to it. The idea of sticking your elderly parent in a nursing home is not well received in those cultures like they do here. However, along with the wealth and greed that has permeated those countries, this part of their culture is changing, too, sadly. |
Umm I've never posted on here about this ![]() The trait I have seen SO often— unabashed arrogance, their need to command center stage, to talk endlessly, to constantly interrupt, all from the beginning of an encounter to the end of an encounter. Indians rarely dialogue, they monologue. It is hard not to conclude that they see themselves as special, better, more knowledgeable about anything and everything than the person they find themselves with. I invariably come away from such conversations—if they can be called that—thinking of Indians as simply insufferable. And yet while I don’t why they are this way, I suspect it is very much bound up with India’s long rigid caste system, one in which privilege and the sense of entitlement and so much more have been determined by position in a stifling class hierarchy as formal and determining as any the world has ever known. Can all Indians be characterized as I have drawn attention to them here? Certainly not. But, then, it is not without reason that Indians and Koreans and Americans and Jews and Arabs and Russians are often stereotyped. They are stereotyped because more often than not through experience we come to expect them to act in particular ways, and more often than not we are not disappointed. |
You quoted me. I've lived here since 1994. I've never run across a lot of Indians in any neighborhood I've lived in (Mount Pleasant, Capitol Hill, and now Glover Park). What neighborhood do you live in? |
Because I loved him, and I knew that he was the love of my life, as well as my dearest friend. I was 100% committed to him, and I knew he was to me. So it started to seem reasonable to marry. BTW, I find Indians from India annoying because of their arrogance. My husband is thankfully not like this. |
When did you live on Capitol Hill? I am Indian and live there now. There are quite a few of us on the Hill. |
+1 I think people just tend to notice it when it's about "their" group. |
