Spending 30k on a ring?

When I was looking at rings many large ones looked gaudy and made me self conscious. I'm in big law and most of the women in my office have modest solitaires. Two have larger flashier rings; one tries to down play it.

I would focus more of how it sparkles versus getting some massive rock. Many will think a very large ring is fake and no woman wants to have to deal with that.

I was raised on the East Coast with the notion that diamonds are better when bigger. She likes nice things but she isn't over the top with it. All her jewelry is expensive because she is allergic to fake ones. She is big city mid-west girl ( Chi-Town). My net worth is the double digit millions and she makes roughly $130,000 ( Pharmacist).

My sister took her out with an excuse to look at rings. She told my sister the only style she likes is Asscher cut with the diamond band. I don't think she cares about carat size but 2-3 seems about what my buddies got their wives.

I would have been appalled if my now DH had wasted that much money on a ring. He spent about 5K and I love it. .75 carat diamond with two .5 carat sapphires on either side. 3 carats and I would have felt like he didn't know me at all.

Also, you say money isn't an issue, but I wouldn't spend it if you don't have a down payment for a house or a good chunk saved for retirement.

If you are in an industry in which people make a lot of money (law, finance) then the wives will look to see the other wives' rings. No girl wants to be the one with the 1 ct diamond when everyone else is sporting 2+ carats plus an eternity band for each kid.

PS, OP - as with so many things, size isn't everything. I've seen lots of women with big rings consisting of dull, ugly diamonds. I'd rather have a smaller, clearer diamond than a big, gaudy and dull one.

Given your background I would say go for a 2-3 carat ring. How big is her finger, if under a size six I would get a two carat, if she's got a bigger finger go larger.

Not to be flashy but money is no object when it comes to the ring. I want to get her something that she will love. The other option is the same ring but 2 carat for around 20k.

+1000. Sparkles are a thousand times more important than size.

In what alternative universe is wearing 6 carats of diamonds practical?

Fine, we get it. You're rich and can buy a huge ring. So why are you asking then? Do what you want.

She not catty like that. We already have a new home, cars, etc. We are not very young ( I'm 34, she's 28). I own two companies in Chicago. I'm not in law or finance.

This diamond is high quality. I am having it designed. It's a great cut and colorless. The best of the best, I was told.

Her hands are normal size. Her ring size is 5. She's petite-framed and small in terms of height and weight.

I'm not gloating. I'm asking a serious question. This is a very amazing yet terrifying decision.

A high quality 3 ct ring costs way more than $30k. What does the report say and which kind does it have?
