We were also matched with Cleveland for PK3. Does anyone know if the kids take naps in PK3? I've asked the school but not gotten a clear response.

All schools do naps for pk3.

Cleveland's dual language program is excellent at least through the 2nd grade. I'm not sure about the upper grades but it's a strong school overall.

Naps are every day for PK3 and PK4.

It's a charter, less established. cleveland has one of the longest running bilingual programs in Dc and has long been a high achieving school. Its teachers and former principal won many awards. It won a $250k grant from the citybridge foundation to further differentiate instruction based on ability. It is an amazing school! By less established, do you mean white people only discovered it recently?

Can we be friends?

My DS is at Cleveland for PK3 Non-immersion and we love the school. He has a wonderful teacher and the mixed PK3/PK4 class has been a great learning environment for him. The PK3 program has just the right amount of academics and creative play. He is also in the before/after school program (I can drop off as early as 745 and pick up by 6:00 pm). The program is currently free, is run by the school and staffed by teacher's aides and they just started adding specials. In addition, breakfast is free and served in the classroom and lunch is free too.

Coming from a very diverse preschool in NW DC (we are AA btw), I was initially concerned with the lack of diversity (i.e. few white, same sex parent families), but this is no longer a concern. The school has a solid program, decent test scores and is striving to improve. I predict that with the changing neighborhood there will be very few out of boundary spots within in the next few years.

Thanks for this, PP. Can you comment about the general make up the non-immersion PK classes? Given the enthusiasm for the school on this site and elsewhere, I was a bit surprised at the limited racial diversity in the classroom. But most of the kids looked pretty pulled together, so my guess was that there were a lot of middle class families in the school? (compared to when i toured, say, garrison, with a similar mix of racial diversity, but lots of the kids looked rough and likely from at-risk homes). What's your impression as to mix of professional, middle class, poor, at risk, etc in the class? And is there much parental involvement?

I had the same impression as you when I toured the school. The children are very well-mannered and move about the halls and stairwells quietly and in an orderly fashion. It is a disciplined but nurturing environment, which I think really benefits my child with minor impulse control issues. All of the parents in my child's class are great, involved parents and there are plenty of parents that are middle or upper middle class. Obviously, there are a lot of FARM kids that attend, the projects are a block away and most of the Hispanic kids are probably FARM, but the kids are well- behaved (more so than the kids at my other DS's upper NW school). The PTA is also very active and there are great opportunities for parents to volunteer.

I'll also add that my son has an IEP and he actually gets 3x the services that were outlined in plan. They do get "homework" (a weekly packet and a reading log sheet), but my son enjoys doing it and I feel that it is very age appropriate.

I totally understand your apprehension, I felt the same way-because diversity was so important to me, but Cleveland is a totally a hidden gem and you will recieve a warm welcome. Plus all the kids love Mr. O, a teacher's aide and staff member for before and after-care.

I just want to note that my frame of reference is the upper NW elementary school my other child attends.

I hope this helps.
