Given the enthusiasm for the school on this site and elsewhere, I was a bit surprised at the limited racial diversity in the classroom. But most of the kids looked pretty pulled together, so my guess was that there were a lot of middle class families in the school? (compared to when i toured, say, garrison, with a similar mix of racial diversity, but lots of the kids looked rough and likely from at-risk homes). What's your impression as to mix of professional, middle class, poor, at risk, etc in the class? And is there much parental involvement? [/quote] I had the same impression as you when I toured the school. The children are very well-mannered and move about the halls and stairwells quietly and in an orderly fashion. It is a disciplined but nurturing environment, which I think really benefits my child with minor impulse control issues. All of the parents in my child's class are great, involved parents and there are plenty of parents that are middle or upper middle class. Obviously, there are a lot of FARM kids that attend, the projects are a block away and most of the Hispanic kids are probably FARM, but the kids are well- behaved (more so than the kids at my other DS's upper NW school). The PTA is also very active and there are great opportunities for parents to volunteer. I'll also add that my son has an IEP and he actually gets 3x the services that were outlined in plan. They do get "homework" (a weekly packet and a reading log sheet), but my son enjoys doing it and I feel that it is very age appropriate. I totally understand your apprehension, I felt the same way-because diversity was so important to me, but Cleveland is a totally a hidden gem and you will recieve a warm welcome. Plus all the kids love Mr. O, a teacher's aide and staff member for before and after-care. I just want to note that my frame of reference is the upper NW elementary school my other child attends.
