OK, let's ask! Why aren't you smart enough to use birth control in your 40s?

It's not that OP isn't smart enough to understand the reasons, it's that there has been thread after thread these past few months of women in their 40s posting that they weren't using birth control and might be pregnant, don't want to be pregnant, aren't sure if they want to be pregnant, don't know what to do. Reading about women in their 40s who just neglected to use birth control and are now terminating a pregnancy because they didn't think they could get pregnant at 41 (42, 43, etc.) and already have enough kids is mind-boggling and irritating. I guess I expect better of women in this area.

To the PP who said it couldn't happen to her at 48 . . . yes, the chances are very slim but there was a long thread on pregnancies in the late 40s not that long ago. My own grandmother got pregnant naturally at 47 in what had to have been a one-shot deal.

I've gotten lazy about birth control now that I'm in my late 30s. I feel like I'm less likely to get pregnant, but fret about it later. I've lost a lot of intentionally achieved pregnancies, so I don't think my odds of carrying to term are as high these days.

I've always been super fertile, so my idea of taking risks is probably not the same as someone else's.

Maybe for you. Birth control pills and the IUD were zero problems for me, and I noticed no difference between that sex and totally birth control-free sex when we were trying to conceive.

I got pregnant at this time last yr., but didn't fret over it because I assumed I would miscarry and I assumed right.

Even my friends and family were quite sure I wouldn't make it past week ten.

Sure it happens, but it is highly unlikely too.

It's more healthy to not take birth control at this stage of life than to take it because at this age, your body is getting old and the less you do to it the better.

It's more healthy to not take birth control at this stage of life than to take it because at this age, your body is getting old and the less you do to it the better.

But that assumes a woman is 100% responsible for birth control. Same with the blood clot poster. There are barrier forms of protection and birth control a male partner can use (condoms! vasectomy!).

So many posters on DCUM believe they can't get pregnant after 40 because the odds are so low. The odds may be low but so what? Do you wear your seat belt?
