Do we all agree that Alicia Silverstone's approach to parenting is crazy?

I'm confused by the statement he's never been sick, but later on in the article, she explains remedies for fever, stuffy nose, etc. So he has been sick then?

If she believes that her methods keeps her kids healthy more power to her. If people don't believe in her methods then they don't have to buy her books.

People also don't believe in Ayurveda, Acupuncture, Chinese medicine, homeopathy. And yet time and again people use these remedies because conventional medicine fails them.

That's great. When you have cancer, tell me how awesome homeopathy was for curing it. And then go to a surgeon to cut the freaking tumor out.
She's been lucky so far. I have no doubt that a healthy diet will help a kid avoid some illnesses, but not all. Eventually, unless she's keeping the kid in a bubble, he's going to catch something from some schoolmate. And when that fever goes up over 105 and she's just treating it with cabbage leaves, I hope she rethinks this approach.

Yes, kids have always died from chicken pox although it is not terribly common.

Here's the chicken pox headline.

Off topic, but it seems crazy to me that no one discovered the child had a spleen until she died. Also a little scary. Wonder if it hadn't been the chicken pox plus pneumonia it would have been something else because of the lack of spleen.

I have a spleen too, pp. Am I in danger?

My kid had a fever and cough for 3 days and was miserable. I took her into the doctor on Monday, found out she had strep and minor pneumonia, gave her antibiotics and within 1 day she was feeling better and acting like her normal self.

I say hooray for antibiotics!

Every time there is a post about a cough/cold/fever, people always say - go to the ped! Get medical attention. You don't really need medical attention for coughs, colds and low grade fevers. Those can be managed at home. I too use compresses for fevers and many other non medical approaches to managing run of the mill illnesses. Many times kids are given antibiotics without being tested to ensure it is a bacterial infection. My kids have rarely been to doctors except for annual checkups and vaccinations. They are pretty healthy and their illnesses are managed through home remedies. A couple times a sore throat has persisted a long time so we have gone in to make sure it wasn't strep and once my son went to the ER because his fever spiked and wouldn't come down but I am with her that there is no need to run to the doctor or get a prescription or even use all the over the counter meds for colds / coughs. So she uses eucalyptus oil for a stuffy nose - if it works I say go for it. And she puts cold clothes on his head if he has a low grade fever - again if it works - great.

I am very pro vax. Don't agree with her on that point.

We are all in danger!

I don't care about giving the kid miso soup for breakfast or using eucalyptus oil or wet socks or whatever but not vaccinating (absent an actual contraindication) is, as we all know, crazy.

So, she is advocating the Darwin Approach to parenting?

I never go to the doctor or pediatrician for our minor colds, fevers, etc. DH worked as an emergency room and reanimation doc and believes in staggered, thimerosol-free vaccinations, not everything at once.

Vaccinations are important. The rest is not.

Someone needs to slap her with a measle ridden blanket.

Blossom is anti-vax
