Do we all agree that Alicia Silverstone's approach to parenting is crazy?

Not when it comes to not vaccinating. Everything else, yes.

the anti vaxxers are horrible. they are going to ruin the herd immunity that has been keeping the rest of us safe since the industrial revolution.

that is a crazy parenting decision. end of story. anyone who wants to debate it is a fool. we should send all the non vaxxers to an island to live together and get one another sick.

No vaccinations at all...no meds (wet socks to bring down a fever)...a plant-based diet will keep her kid from ever getting sick...crazy, right?

So who is going to buy her book?

I won't buy her book, but I'll look at it in the library. I often think that there's some truth in things like this that at first sound crazy. Her thesis that eating a very clean, healthy diet is the basis for health sounds plausible to me. I think the health of the mother, including what she eats and has eaten during her life pre-conception, has a big impact on the health of the child.

If she doesn't want to vaccinate her kids, that's her choice. If she wants to use cabbage leaves and breast milk for colds, OK, whatever.

Just because some of her ideas seem kooky, doesn't mean all are. I am a firm believer in the value of eating the proper foods, and eliminating all chemicals from environment and diet. I've seen the difference in my family's health, so at least that part of her parenting philosophy is sound. The rest of it, well, I'll read it in the library.

If she doesn't vaccinate her child, it's not just some harmless personal choice. She's imposing that risk on the rest of us. Yes, it's her legal right, but no, it's not OK.

If they will be free of crazies like you, PP, then I would happily join them. My kids are vaccinated so I'm not concerned about them getting sick.

You believe in false science, then. Vaccines aren't 100% effective. No one is 100% safe. Anti-vaxers hurt everyone.

Alicia is so dumb. Another Jenny McCarthy.

They should also add the circumcision benefits on there. I will email them.

I agree that it's not just her right to do what she wants with her family if she's anti-vax -- anti-vaxxers are why there is a measles outbreak in NYC and both measles/whooping cough in California. Herd immunity is important. Also, think of the immuno-compromised among us who would be at risk if more people follow the anti-vax trend: the elderly, infants who are too young for vaccinations, people with cancer.

How do you even leave the house with this much fear? I am confident that my kids are safe from the diseases we vaccinate against, understanding that nothing in life is foolproof. And I know that just because other people are not vaccinated does not mean they are diseased or contagious -- they are just not vaccinated.

That's her.

Did the kid ONLY eat pre-chewed food? Or just on occasion? I've squashed a chokeable bit of food in my own mouth before giving it to my son here and there. A lot of what she says sounds ridiculous, but this part doesn't seem that weird to me.

Ugh you'd be surprised. I loved our pediatrician until I brought DS in with a cough/runny nose and he wanted to prescribe antibiotics without any further testing.

If what he had was no big deal why did you feel the need to drag him to the pediatrician?

Yes, because the rest of us are responsible parents and vaccinate.

I leave the house just fine. It isn't fear. It is just the truth. Anti-vaxers are selfish a$$holes and should be treated as such.

What about babies who are too young to have been vaccinated? What about children with legitimate allergies who can't be vaccinated? What about people with compromised immune systems? What about those few for whom the vaccine just doesn't take?

Anyone who thinks that the people who don't vaccinate are harming only themselves is sorely mistaken.

So you think people should not make medical decisions for themselves of for their chidlren, but the government should make those decisions for everyone, for the good of society?

When the decision will help their children by keeping them from being infected, and more importantly keep the entire society free of the disease....
You bet I do!

Also, no one on here even mentioned the government. What we said was that the anti-vaxxers are selfish, stupid, and harming other people. So they should be judged. How/whether we need to involve the government is another question. I do think they should not be allowed in public schools.
