From the Tea Party website, these are the core beliefs of the TP:
1. Illegal aliens are here illegally. 2. Pro-domestic employment is indispensable. 3. A strong military is essential. 4. Special interests must be eliminated. 5. Gun ownership is sacred. 6. Government must be downsized. 7. The national budget must be balanced. 8. Deficit spending must end. 9. Bailout and stimulus plans are illegal. 10. Reducing personal income taxes is a must. 11. Reducing business income taxes is mandatory. 12. Political offices must be available to average citizens. 13. Intrusive government must be stopped. 14. English as our core language is required. 15. Traditional family values are encouraged. So, with which ones do you have a problem? I have to say, these are pretty reasonable to me. |
I strongly disagree with 5, 6, 9, 10, 14 and 15. The other ones are platitudes and I suspect I disagree we how the Tea Party would implement them. |
Much of that list I can get on board with. I disagree that gun ownership is "sacred". I disagree that income taxes must end. Disagree that business taxes must be reduced. Maybe SMALL business income taxes should be reduced but corporate subsidies must end. I don't mind encouraging traditional family values but I do mind legislating them. I think it's great if govt wants to ask, "How can we improve our society to make life easier for families and thus help them hold it all together?" Not anti gay, anti gay marriage, anti single mother, anti food stamp, anti abortion, anti birth control. As long as family values manifests itself in homophobia and misogyny, the Tea Party is a no go for too many. And the list above fails to mention their God awful, blatant racism. |
And until the TP stops calling people illegal aliens, I suspect we will never have a productive dialogue. |
I have issues with 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 15. 1. Illegal aliens are here illegally. (THIS IS A REDUNDANT STATEMENT AND NOT A PLATFORM) 2. Pro-domestic employment is indispensable. (WHATEVER. WE LIVE IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY. IT IS NOT GOVERNMENT'S JOB TO MEDDLE WITH BUSINESS AND TELL IT WHO TO HIRE) 3. A strong military is essential. (BULLSHIT.) 4. Special interests must be eliminated. (I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS, BUT WE HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO PETITION GOVERNMENT, SO THIS SOUNDS RATHER FASCIST) 5. Gun ownership is sacred. (BULLSHIT. SEIZE THE GUNS) 6. Government must be downsized. (MEH. OK.) 7. The national budget must be balanced. (NO IT MUST NOT. THIS IS IDIOTIC. GOVERNMENT IS A BUSINESS OR A HOUSEHOLD. AND GOVERNMENT DEBT IS A CORNERSTONE OF CAPITAL FORMATION) 8. Deficit spending must end. (NO IT MUST NOT. SEE ABOVE. AGAIN, IT'S A GOVERNMENT, NOT A BUSINESS OR HOUSEHOLD. WE DON'T NEED TO BALANCE THE BUDGET, AND ARGUABLY SHOULD NOT DO THIS) 9. Bailout and stimulus plans are illegal. (ON THE CONTRARY. THEY ARE VERY LEGAL CONSIDERING THAT CONGRESS AUTHORIZED THEM. MOREOVER, GOVERNMENT HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN THE ECONOMY TOO). 10. Reducing personal income taxes is a must. (MEH. OUR TAXES ARE AT AN HISTORIC LOW AS IT IS. TAXES AREN'T A BIG DEAL) 11. Reducing business income taxes is mandatory. (I DON'T REALLY DISAGREE WITH THIS BUT I DO THINK WE SHOULD SHIFT TO A VAT OR CONSUMPTION TAX. BUSINESSES DON'T ACTUALLY PAY TAXES -- WORKERS, CONSUMERS AND SHAREHOLDERS DO) 12. Political offices must be available to average citizens. (YEAH, BUT THIS IS TRUE NOW. WEIRD PRINCIPLE). 13. Intrusive government must be stopped. (WHATEVER THAT MEANS.) 14. English as our core language is required. (BULLSHIT. XENOPHOBIC AND UNNECESSARY) 15. Traditional family values are encouraged. (BULLSHIT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT A TRADITIONAL FAMILY IS, BUT THIS WOULD SEEM TO BE ANTI-GAY, ANTI-MIXED RACE, ANTI-ADOPTION, ANTI-FERTILITY HELP. IT ALSO SEEMS TO BE A DIRECT CONTRADICTION OF 13.) |
correcting myself: government is NOT a business or a household and doesn't need to balance a budget. |

--so you don't believe that the cities are the minority?
Anyone with any sense would know this. Message to future politicians who want a seat in Virginia: You want our vote? Tell us how you are going to alleviate the outrageous traffic on I-95, I-81, and I-66. Don't mouth platitudes towards us for many of us are well educated and will see through your vain, empty words. You might persuade folks in Cootersviille but not the large number of us who are educated and can think critically. Be it known that whatever you say will appear on the internet for all of us to see and evaluate. Tell us how you plan to cause corporations to consider Virginia as a place to set up shop but also keep them accountable so that we do not have a Love Canal or Mica, Romania episode. Tell us how these corporations will pay their fair share because their profits are in part derived from the benefits from utilizing our roads, our police to keep thieves and vandals at bay, and the fire department and National Guard to save their buildings from disaster. Very importanly, tell us how these corporations will contribute to our education system for it is our schools who educate their employee's children. Tell us how you will not tax small businesses into oblivion but also paying their fair share when utilizing public works. Social issues? If a law has been passed already then the people have spoken. Let it be, let it be. If a court mandated it over the will of the people then you may have a case. Finally don't ever think you are going to take our guns away from us. If you try then just like in Colorado we will yank your greasy behind right out of office and toss you out. Count on it! |
Someone should come take your guns away today. Seriously. Jesus. Pry them from your dead, cold hands? Yes, that can be arranged. |
I am an independent. After listening to what the Tea Party and the republican party in general have to say, they will not get my vote. I have known these type of people all my life. They are ignorant, what policies and budget priorities they can put on paper are not based in reality and many are racist(and the other willing go along with them). This is why a weak ass candidate like terry mcauliffe won Va. |
How do you reconcile 3 with 10 & 11. How will you pay for this strong military without taxes. How do you reconcile 3 with 6. DOD makes up almost 50% of goernment spending. DOD was the hardest hit agency during sequestration because of its sheer size. |
|
I am a republican and I have a hard time voting for tea party candidates. I don't care about social issues at all and I think ALL parties need to stay out of my bedroom. I don't think gays are ruining my marriage. If someone wants to have an abortion, it's their decision.
I'm not a libertarian because I believe in national defense. I wish Chris Christie was running in VA instead of NJ. |
|
Cooch is too right wing and too many people in Northern VA are Gov't workers who vote party line democrat. Cooch probably would have won if there was no third party taking the votes.
Reps do need to back off a bit and they would be way more successful. |
|
In the past I have voted for Republicans in local and state gov't positions (always dem on presidential), however I simply do not trust that the Republican party can be trusted to actually govern our society any longer.
I would no longer vote Rep. on the state or local level b/c they bow to the Tea Party and have become obsessed with rhetoric. After the shutdown debacle, where the moderate republicans (what few of are left) couldn't work up the balls to get gov't working, that worked with those that tried to stop every opportunity of compromise and talk down the crazies in the Congress, I have absolutely NO FAITH in their ability to lead and govern. They are flushing our great country down the toilet. |
| ^ I should be more clear about the opportunities to compromise. I'm talking about all the time they had prior to the shutdown. I also have no respect for the fact that they turned a blind eye when they knew what that the long term strategy of the Tea Party was to cause this shutdown. |
We can have a strong military and still have reduced taxes. There is so much waste in the federal government. The main job of our government is national defense. But, it has become everything to everyone - much of what they do could be better left to the states. So, this explains both of your questions.... In response to a previous poster, the TP has NEVER said NO taxes. They also believe that taxes are essential to provide for a national defense. But, it is ludicrous how our taxes have increased, our government has increased, and it has become less and less efficient. And, by the way, I am a spouse of a government employee. |
