DC locals...If money and school/work logistics were of no concern, what city/town would you live in?

I'm not sure how many real locals will respond on this forum, if any. I am one though, so here it goes:

#1) McLean - it's got the expensive homes, and it's the most convenient location as almost any store or food type imaginable is within 5 minutes because of Tysons Corner. Plus, it's on top of all the major roads - 495, 66, GW Parkway, and the Toll Road. Convenience!

#2) Chevy Chase, MD. More urban. Older moneyish, borders DC. Very walkable.

#3) Potomac, MD. The most gorgeous of anyplace in the DC area by far, but almost no retail at all in the whole town. It just very very residential - like Great Falls, VA.

PP again.

I would never move into DC with a family. MAYBE if I was still single, and if I did, definitely not Georgetown - barf. It's a bunch of kids and a fraction of the stores that Tysons has, and everything is up or down a steep hill wherever you walk, and there is no parking and traffic is a nightmare there all the time. No thanks.

If someone handed me a million dollars, I'd buy a house in North Arlington. I might not even need the whole million to get what I would want.

If you were truly a local you would know that the oldest money neighborhoods in the area are in the District. But you don't know that.

I would move to Portland, OR if money and school/work logistics were of no concern.

Anonymous wrote:What is with all these Georgetown supporters? I don't really get it. I have spent a lot of time in Georgetown, and it seems to have the worst of all worlds (not comparing with slums, obviously): bad restaurants, bad public transportation, bad parking, bad accessiblity, crowded sidewalks... If you wanted more urban, I would understand Dupont or Penn Quarter, but I really don't understand what Georgetown has other than historical cache. Can someone please explain the current logic on this one?

Gtown is very pretty and there are areas that are away from tourist trap places, plus some homes have garages, backyards and driveways. I would choose east village area of Gtown or some streets in Dupont. These are really my favorite areas in DC if money and schools were no issue. At this point, since money and schools are important, it would be Mclean if I were to move back to DC area, even metro accessible walkable parts of Arlington are out of my price range.

OP, your post is confusing. Are you asking about towns within DC metro area, or the entire East coast or Mid Atlantic region, or the world? Seems like you are interested in DC metro area, but responses here indicate otherwise. There is no ocean front in DC.

I work near U Street, and once you get a couple of blocks from the main drag, the neighborhood is filled with lovely brownstones/row houses with charming little yards and gardens. I could do that.
