Any idea of the time the DCPS lottery will go live on their website?

That happened to us last year. It was a new school too, but we we're pretty sure it would be a good fit. So, we bit the bullet and couldn't be happier.

If we all spent only just half the energy wasted on open houses and lotteries and discussions about them on investing in our schools we'd all win, especially the kids thrown into turmoil year after year. I speculate that's what the person who reported that their backup worked out very well did. Cheers to you!

I grow so tired of this completely naive argument about investing in your local underperforming school. It takes significant time (as in years) to turn around a school that is entrenched in apathy at best, corruption at worst. If you're a parent willing to sacrifice even a single year of your young child's education on a questionable school with a track record of underachievement that's your silly choice...at least it ups the lottery prospects for my child at schools with a record of success. The time to "invest" in your local bad school in order to improve it is BEFORE you start having children because turn-around can takes years, not months.

DCPS pre-K mom here - good luck to everyone! I am crossing my fingers that DD#2 gets in to her sister's school so I can begin a beautiful year of walking both kids to school. But maybe not?
I know that some of us will be disappointed, especially those that had their heart set on one particular school, or only included high-demand, full-of-incoming-siblings schools on your list of 6, but the results today are not the end of the process. Take heart.
You can still get on waitlists for charters (and I haven't checked but I bet there are some you can still apply for.) We were admitted to a proximity OB PS-3 2 years ago, but as the spring and summer passed we got calls from several more charter schools and eventually the DCPS school we really wanted. Granted we are not talking about JKLMMO, we live east of the park, but our school, facility, teachers and principal are fantastic.
I do know a couple of families who were completely shut out last year. Remember that daycare/private preK bills are not forever, if you can tighten your belt you can get through this! Also keep on shopping i.e. attending open houses, visiting schools that you didn't get to earlier, and see new schools that are opening. You may make a pleasant discovery that will save you a lot of heartache later. And maybe you can share what you found with other parents behind you, or in the same boat.

Just thought of something. I bet you they will only be available sometime after 4-5pm. Ths way they can avoid a possible flood of phone calls to the central office and schools. I'd say don't bother checking before late afternoon.

2 years ago it was late afternoon. I knew before I went to do daycare pick up that my child got into our local high demand PreK. If I remember correctly, last year there was a glitch and results were posted later than expected.

Hang in there - remember when you were waiting for labor to start.

Ah, good to know. i just looked at the time and got a flurry of butterflies in my stomach, and honestly, I thought I was cool as a cucumber about the lottery. They do make it nerve wracking!
