You can still get on waitlists for charters (and I haven't checked but I bet there are some you can still apply for.) We were admitted to a proximity OB PS-3 2 years ago, but as the spring and summer passed we got calls from several more charter schools and eventually the DCPS school we really wanted. Granted we are not talking about JKLMMO, we live east of the park, but our school, facility, teachers and principal are fantastic. 
I do know a couple of families who were completely shut out last year. Remember that daycare/private preK bills are not forever, if you can tighten your belt you can get through this! Also keep on shopping i.e. attending open houses, visiting schools that you didn't get to earlier, and see new schools that are opening. You may make a pleasant discovery that will save you a lot of heartache later. And maybe you can share what you found with other parents behind you, or in the same boat.[/quote]
