| I can't believe how mean and snotty my SIL and MIL are. They criticize everything I do and it feels like they're always ganging up on me. I'd really wish we could be friends And this year I thought I'd do something nice and host the Christmas Eve party. I'm not a great cook but I tried my hand at a turkey roulade. They seemed to hate it, I wish I hadn't spent all day getting it ready. They turned up their noses at the apps I bought too, and I guess my favorite christmas dessert wasn't good enough for them either. I even bought toys and set up a play area for their kids and they still gave me the stinkeye. They're never going to like me no matter what I do. Sigh. What a terrible party. |
I feel for you. Sorry the roulade didn't turn out, but at least they could appreciate the fact that you tried, even if you aren't a whiz at entertaining. |
I have to agree with this pp (obviously being the "Devil's Advocate"). Is this the first party SIL has ever thrown? Maybe the first house? I know people will say "well, she's BEEN to parties so she knows what is expected", but maybe she thought it was WAY easier than it looked (kudos to the OP). Yes, it's extreme, but have you taken into account if she actually tried, or are you just assuming she was just trying to show off that shiny new house? Did your brother (or the non-inlaw part of the family in this equation) say anything about any of this? |
| I need more info the hostess before I judge. Age, race, religion, income, job, cost of house, etc. I'm mostly sympathetic to her but the part about not allowing the wine and then not giving the wine back is a bit much. I'm hoping that part was a lie. |
|
I have been to parties like this. My first "offer" is to open the wine to let it breathe. I don't wait for a dissenting opinion. Then I consume a big glass, even if it is out of a solo plastic cup.
Makes the rest of the evening go much better. |

SlL seems crazy on the face of it, but...
were her hardwood floors barely dry, or something? Could there have been a sound reason for holding a Christmas party in her (giant eat-in designer) kitchen? Anyway, I'm sure she'll be a better hostess when the "new house" novelty wears off. Until then, drink before coming
|
oh OK sort of like if the cook spits in your food, you should be gracious and eat it makes perfect sense . .
crap is crap |
Why should race factor in? |
| This is such classic DCUM. The party was shitty. The hostess was terrible. Why the analysis? She was rude, didn't provide enough food or drinks and made everybody uncomfortable. She shouldn't have offered to host on an important occasion if she couldn't handle it! If she wanted to show off the house she could easily do this (it's her family after all) at any other time. All of you 'no big deal' people are just hysterical. |
|
I see both sides. I rarely enjoy parties my in-laws throw because of all the prep I have to do. It is usually buttery food galore without anything healthy so I eat beforehand. They refuse to care about food allergies so I bring food for my allergic child and follow him around to make sure he doesn't eat anything unsafe. There is also always drama. Bleck.
That said, I find it interesting you totally blame your SIL and not your brother. How do you know he didn't want things this way? |
You people..... no this was not her first party. She is 44 years old and she throws wonderful parties for her dear friends all the time. She did not try, she was just doing it so that she had a reason to have people over to show off her house. It is not the first giant house she has owned either. She is extremely wealthy and she knows how to entertain. She is just stingy and worried about her new floors. Nice try on trying to put yourself into her shoes, but not quite accurate. SIL is very snooty and most likely dreaded having us there in the first place. Did you even read the original post? I offered to help, I brought beverages THAT SHE HID, and I appreciated her giving the kids toys. We did not give her the stinkeye, more like we tried to have fun while she made us feel uncomfortable. She did not have apps, and as for ice cream being her favorite dessert . She just wanted to save her money and her house for more important people, not her family. And I hardly doubt she spent all day getting it ready. You are funny though PP, you need to put that psychic ability to good use.

| O.P. here, just to add because someone said it would make it easier to understand my issues, She is my DH's sister. She is half Indian, half white. She was raised by gracious, kind, wealthy parents. She is beautiful. |
in a word, your SIL sounds atrocious. |
Why are you pandering to racists? |
|
I pictured her as Korean or Filipino for some reason.
And I blame the husband. Lots of people have crazy wives. The man needs to be the reality check. |
