DC Public and Public Charter Schools
it will most definitely move deeper. I know a number of families (ourselves included) who are waiting on the Yu Ying tours and DCPS wait list movement before making a final decision for the fall. |
| My daughter is #19 and we haven't heard anything. |
| We're 14 and got an email at 9:39 this morning offering a spot. |
| Sorry, 14 for pre-k & in. |
| Early 20ties and accepted a spot for PreK. |
| 9:54 you should call the school (if you're pre-K). |
| For those that were recently offered a spot how long do you have to reply? We are now in the 40s on the waitlist and wondering if we have a chance. |

We got in and were told to give a verbal answer tomorrow morning and get paperwork in by Friday. My guess is that they won't bother moving the waitlist based on verbal commitments tomorrow, but will on Monday after paperwork is in (this seems to be what they did with this round of admissions--we didn't move at all until after last Friday's paperwork deadline for admitted students, even though it seems highly unlikely that no-one turned down the school between lottery day and paperwork day). Just out of curiosity, by how many numbers did you move up yesterday? I'm wondering how many new admits there are (which also = the number of folks who turned down a spot, which might give you a sense of the % of parents who are accepting). |
| We moved up 26 spots. So I guess since we know not all 26 will turn down spots it is unlikely we will get a spot this round. We are in a tough spot, this is our first choice school. However, we were totally shut out for all DCPS and charters where we applied. We have to commit to private school by May 31 or we are on the hook for a full year tuition. We really don't want to go this path but this school (where we are now in the 40s) is the closest we are by far (in the mid 100's and 200's for the rest). Any advice is appreciated. We at least feel lucky our best number is at our first choice. |
I would call the school and ask how far they got in to their waitlist last year. If I recall correctly it was the twenties, but they might know. However, there were really only 25 open spots in last year's Pre-K, because 25 were taken by siblings. So there are substantially more open slots this year than last and fewer siblings to take them. This is good news, and even suggests that a number in the 40s might not shut you out. The bad news is those higher numbers do most of their moving well after your May 31st window. |
I feel for your situation. Yu Ying was our first choice - the only public and/or charter we applied: we REALLY wanted Chinese and we were fortunate enough to get in. Our contingency plan if we did not get in this year was to apply again for preK next year, as soon as the application appeared online since that makes a difference in the waitlist number. I don't know how old your child is but a lot of late summer birthday kids especially boys get held back anyway and since Yu Ying preK will 100% mandarin, it really makes even less of a difference IMO. Our other choices for schools were immersion French at WIS and regular old St Patrick's and we would have applied for preK at WIS next year and regular K at St. Pat's had we not gotten into Yu Ying for the Fall. Good luck! I hope your LO get's in and your family gets the good news before May 31. Too bad that families already with acceptances at Yu Ying and at other schools cannot make up their minds. The way the system is set up it's bad karma all around. |
| PP: Wanted to add that if your DC start in preK at Yu Ying and stay til 8th grade, that's 10 years of not having to pay private school tuition around 300K+ in after tax dollars. May well be worth risking to see if you get in after May 31 without committing to private school especially if your DC is happy where she is for another year. |
| Can tuition insurance help? I do not know the details- but a friend was not happy at 1 private amd moved mid year to another private and was able to recover a significant portion of tuition. |
In the preK class entering 2010, there were 50 total slots in the class. There were 25 siblings/founders/staff kids. The last child to enter the class several weeks in to the school year was number 33 on the initial wait list. So, about a 50% yield, meaning 25 random + 33 off wait list were offered spots, to fill 25 non-sibling slots. This assumes that all siblings enrolled which is not a verifiable assumption. I predict that this year, YY will get down to around #100 on the initial preK wait list, and that will happen in mid-September. I think you'll get in, but not before May 31. So, I'd ask the question, is there any other preK option for next year, that does not involve signing a tuition contract now? What is your in boundary option for K? If that's acceptable, and you can live with uncertainty, I'd roll the dice on YY wait list clearing. How about Bridges or Appletree as a backup til the in boundary K? If your inboundary K is not acceptable, I'm not sure. If you don't get into YY for preK, I wouldnt' count on it at all for K. I'm amazed by the size (100+) of the YY K wait list, and I don't think that it will move very much. |
