Jesus can't we just get car advice without all the crazies trying to force their views down our throats?

No, not anymore. Your nostalgia for a moment in American culture that passed a generation ago is misplaced. It's not entirely your fault, since cultural diffusion is painfully slow in the provinces, but it's now time to get with the 21st century program.

Yup... ask a friend or a car dealer.

If you live in the city, it can be tricky driving and parking any of the bigger wider cars. Just passed someone driving down the middle of a two way street and stressing out. Scared of hitting her mirror on the park cars. The funniest thing I saw was in the E street theater. The park lots spaces are small, ie get one or two more parking spots per row by make them smaller. The only problem was the larger cars and suvs could not open their door. So everyone skipped one spot.
China and rest of developing world will not reach our levels of co2 ever...just not enough resources.

I'm not so concerned about the environment, but more about your pocket book. Do you have any idea how much gas will cost for that large of a vehicle, especially at $5 a gallon?

I have a friend who purchased a Denali while she was pregnant with her first, with plans to have a large family. It has been 6 years now and they have been unable to have another child despite many years of fertility treatments. They still have their big Denali, though, and pay about $400 PER MONTH on gas for that thing.

She wonders where she's supposed to get money to save for her child's college.

I can't imagine where she could have found some savings . . .

CO2 another way the Chinese are eating our lunch. OP get that SUV maybe we can catch up!

You are right that china and india are a major problems and that the their growth is unprecedented. But US is 2 in global emissions and per capita we are way ahead. Don't you think if we stemmed our rapacious consumption of chinese goods we might slow things down.

I agree. Climate change is here and we will have to adjust to the reality. I don't think that means we through up our hands and trash the planet.

no, we cannot slow things down. The rate of increase by China, India (Brazil, etc.) is so much greater than our possible slowing.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that OP doesn't live in the city. There's dark-skinned people here, you know.

Wait a second... OP, if you're a *really* Southerner shouldn't you have a driver a'la Driving Miss Daisy?
I call bullshit.

A Yukon XL really is an absurdly large car that no one really needs as a family car. We rented one in Hawaii when it was me, DH, my sister, her husband and my parents. And we still could've fit more people!! It was definitely better than renting two cars, but really how often are you going to be driving around 6+ people plus stuff? Be practical.

OP here. I do live in the city. But I think you must think that all Southerners are racist GOP members huh?

Palisades? hahahaha

If you're driving, and parking, around the actual city, and not just it's leafy suburban borders, a Yukon, XL or not, is just insane. And expensive (re gas). But have at it, if you like.

DH has a Tahoe and we both wish either he had gotten the Suburban or I had gotten an SUV with a third row when I bought my smaller SUV. Do we need a larger SUV for every day life? No. But we do sometimes go on trips in the car. Two kids plus all the crap we need to go anywhere fills up a Tahoe fast. Plus, we often have out of town visitors, which means, we have to take two cars to go anywhere with our two kids, the two of us plus out of town guests. If we were expecting a third child, we'd be back to the dealership for a 3rd row SUV in a heartbeat.

PS- We live in the city and don't really have a problem with the size of our vehicles other than the Tahoe not fitting into some parking garages.

PPS- I'd be more than happy to trade in my SUV for a Prius or even public transportation if it would have any real measurable impact on the environment.

12:35, what are you packing for car trips that fills up your Tahoe? Not being snarky, either, I'm genuinely curious. I have two young children and we drove to Orlando last year and we were able to fit everything easily in to our Sonata. One was an infant, too, so we had a pack and play, two strollers, and booster seat in addition to all of our luggage.

She lives within the DC boundary, though whether the Palisades is in the city in anything other than name is debatable.
