How long could you survive if you were trapped in your house?

Like two weeks if we immediately started to ration. We run pretty lean on supplies.

Seriously?

Got me to thinking about how long we could survive in our house if we couldn't leave but still had electricity and water. We currently have 3 full fridges with attached freezers, plus a chest freezer and a tall freezer. Plus a full pantry and additional excess food in the basement pantry. We are a family of 5. I would think we could make it at least a year? Maybe more if we actually rationed our food.

What happens to all of the food in the fridges and freezers when you lose power?

OP here - we have a natural gas generator. So it will do until the natural gas goes out. Whole house generator.

So that's how long you'd last. Without some way to refrigerate and freeze food, you'd have to eat it all and rely on fresh/perishable stuff.

You need to add an armory. How long can you hold off a group of hungry armed people?

OP “I’m a prepper! Look at me!”
Most of DCUM - not prepping.
With rationing my family would last 3 weeks. We have 20+ canned food (soup, tuna, beans) and several boxes of pasta. Would eat refrigerated food first if we loose electricity.

You do know this is a sci-fi thriller?

My husband would die when his meds ran out in two months.

And that's the real problem people don't consider. Diabetics, asthmatics, etc. You can get food a lot easier than you can the meds.

Ooh, late night thoughts. I'm in.

Essential question: Do I have water?? Without it, and with no warning to stock up, I'd last like 2-3 days.

Secondary question: Do I have power? With running water, but without power, I can probably go 2-3 weeks. The stuff in the fridge and freezer would go bad, and I'd have no ability to cook beans and pasta. If I can go outside the house safely, I could push that a little, using the grill for fire cooking.

If I have water and power, but no ability to bring in additional supplies, I think I can squeeze 2-3 months out of what's actually in the house right now. That's with rationing, and the meals would start to suck pretty quickly. Lots of pantry staples that require inputs to be edible, and more inputs to be tasty.

I do think about defending those resources. I don't own a gun, nor would I be able to use it if I had one. But I DO have burglar bars, leftover from a shittier time in the city. So not the easiest of targets. If we hunkered down, kept the lights off, I'd give us even odds of not getting victimized.

At our house in Alexandria, maybe a year if we push it.

At our cabin in Greene County, Va, pretty much indefinitely. We have 11 acres, well, septic, fenced garden space 20 x 20, a basement with probably 500-700 cans of food stuffs, tons of meds (both of us are docs) lots of guns and 400-500 rounds of ammo.

We could probably last 2-3 weeks as long as the electricity, natural gas, sewer and water keep flowing. Without those, a couple of days.

Tough to do in the winter.

A long time for food/water, but mentally probably not even a week.
