| Wow that sounds terrible. But you don’t know if the parents discussed many trade school options with the child and then the child chose that option. |
|
wow. What do you do? Sounds kind of (this is such a buzz word on DCUM) low class.
Is there something else at play here? Is the daughter not a very good student? Is this an immigrant family? Do the parents have college degrees? If she does'nt want the cosmetology program, are there other trade options? One thing I've seen some peopke do is apply for admin trype roles for office jobs. If she's suited for an office type job maybe she could apply to companies, or the federal gov't. Or military (but not with scoliosis, likely?). Tough economy for high school graduates. I think cosmetology is tough unless you really love it and want to do it. |

If the kid wanted college, she would have had amazing grades and SAT scores.
I wish more parents were like your coworkers. Trades and vocational programs can still pay a lot. Too many kids go to college because it's easier than working. |
| I know lots of cosmetologists who make great money. And it's a good career to have a family with because you can work nights and weekends, something you can't do with most college jobs. My cousin makes well over 300k, but she is good at her job. She charges $400 for highlights and a cut. I too can't get cheaper than $350 in this area. |
I knew this. My ex's rich parents (one of whom was a VP in a tech company) wouldn't cosign for him. He had to go to community college because it was all he could afford on his minimum wage job. He couldn't get any loans whatsoever. His parents were such a mess. |

She does not need to file for FAFSA. Our 18- year old got a job in October and is in community college. He just got his 2nd job for summer.
He has enough money to pay for school, rent, health insurance, and open a Roth IRA. If her health does not allow here to work 40- hours a week, she can still go to college, but it just takes longer to finish. Stop telling kids that they need parents to go to college. I was an international student working 50- hours a week paying international rate for college. |
| Where there's a will there's a way. She can go to community college for very low cost and get an associates....certain employers will pay for her full degree. Not everyone is handed a silver platter. She will either sink or swim. It's not what I'd do for my kids but I also wouldn’t judge without knowing the full picture. |
h You are full of BS. You do need to fill out the FAFSA to qualify for any financial aid. How much is your 18 year old making? So he’s paying for community college out of pocket and bypassing the FAFSA entirely? How much is his community college? Most community colleges still cost around 4-5k a semester or more. Most 18 year olds cannot pay for that after paying other expenses. You’re full of it. And just because you were working by 50 hours a week and paying for college (so you say) does not mean you didn’t get aid. Not everyone can work those hours and maintain their grades. Stop acting like that should be expected. Your story doesn’t add up. |
What in my post sounds like I have a low class job exactly? Everyone in my dept has a MS or higher. The mom is married to a physician. You act like the feds just hire high school grads. Did you read the post? She wants to go to college. She has decent grades and graduated with an academic honors diplomas and an AP course. |
| Are you offering to take her under your wing here or are you just judging from afar? Not everyone ends up on the path they dreamed of. |
| It's a good career and I assume they are doing this because she didn't do well in school. Sounds like the parents are trying to give her a taste of real life so she starts self launching soon. |
This seems reasonable. |
